DURHAM, N.C. – Duke Athletics celebrated its second annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) this past weekend. A youth clinic on Saturday, and lunch and a Power Panel highlighted the day Sunday in advance of the women's basketball game against NC State.
Through Duke's NGWSD events, nearly $70,000 was raised this year. All proceeds will go to support female student-athlete scholarships at Duke University through the WIN-Athletics scholarship fund.
"This was a tremendous weekend at Duke and we are all so appreciative of the student-athletes, staff and coaches that contributed to the successful celebration of National Girls & Women in Sports Day," said Nina King, Duke's Senior Deputy Director of Athletics/Administration, Legal Affairs and Chief of Staff. "Duke's commitment to championing women and girls in sports goes beyond just one day, and we are fortunate to be part of an institution that takes pride in achieving the goals that NGWSD set nearly 30 years ago."
More than 200 attendees, varying in age from first to eighth grade, were at Saturday's youth clinic held in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The event showcased female varsity sports in an interactive fashion with student-athletes from basketball, softball, field hockey, volleyball, lacrosse, golf, track & field, cross country, rowing, cheer, dance and soccer in attendance, along with staff from sports performance and nutrition.
Sunday's Power Panel was moderated by
Sue Gordon ('80) – former Deputy Director of National Intelligence and a three-time captain of the Duke women's basketball team. The panel included former diver and Olympian
Dr. Abby Johnston McGrath ('13), entrepreneur and former women's lacrosse player
Kat Thomas ('12) and current women's soccer standout
Mia Gyau ('21).
During lunch following the session, Nashville recording artist
Julia Cole gave a captivating performance incorporating themes surrounding female empowerment and growing the next generation of female leaders.
The weekend was capped as the participants were entertained at Cameron Indoor Stadium for an ACC women's basketball showdown between rivals Duke vs. NC State.
