NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Duke sophomore
Toby Fournier posted 26 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils to a 76-46 victory win over Belmont in non-conference women's basketball action the Curb Event Saturday afternoon.
The win is the third straight for the Blue Devils and evens their record to 6-6 for the year.
Riley Nelson added a career-high 17 points, a rebound and two assists, and
Delaney Thomas rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
Ashlon Jackson was the playmaker with a career-best eight assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke used an 8-0 run over a span of 2:07 in the first quarter to build a 10-2 lead after the first media timeout of the contest. Fournier led the surge with six points, including an old-fashioned three-point play, while Nelson scored the other bucket for the Blue Devils.
- Coming out of the huddle, Belmont answered with a 7-0 spurt to make it a one-point game,10-9, with under two minutes to play. Taina Mair stopped the run with a pair of free throws, but Duke couldn't find the bottom of the net again, heading into the first break with a narrow 12-11 lead.
- Duke scored the first 10 points of the second period to push its lead to 22-11 after 6:28 of play. Nelson scored seven of the 10 points, and the Blue Devils defense held Belmont scoreless for 7:38 and to 0-14 shooting in the first seven minutes of the quarter.
- The Blue Devils, spurred by six straight points by Fournier, went on an 8-1 run in the final 2:50 of the period to head into the locker room with the 30-15 advantage. Nelson and Fournier combined for 16 of the team's 18 points in the second quarter and Duke held the Bruins to 1-of-19 shooting in the stanza.
- After getting off to a slow start offensively in the third quarter – two points in the first 2:36 – Duke ran off six points in a span of 1:05 to stretch the lead to 18, 39-21, and forced Belmont to call a timeout.
- Fournier and the Blue Devils kept the momentum, pushing the lead to 51-30 after three quarters. Fournier finished the period with 10 points.
- The start of the fourth quarter was all Blue Devils as they rattled off six points in 1:16 to make it a 25-point game, 57-32, with 8:02 left in the contest.
- Back-to-back threes from Nelson and Jackson gave the Blue Devils their largest lead of the game, 65-35, en route to the 76-46 final score.
- Hillary Fuller led the Bruins with 19 points, going 7-of-15 from the floor, while adding two rebounds, two blocks and an assist.
