DURHAM, N.C. – Using a 10-run inning in the fifth, Duke softball rallied to defeat Campbell, 15-7, in six innings on Tuesday night at the Duke Softball Stadium.
With the win, the Blue Devils improved to 9-1 on the season as the Camels dropped to 5-6. Junior pitcher
Brianna Butler entered in relief during the fifth inning and secured her second victory of the season (2-1).
Duke put a run on the board first as junior
Jameson Kavel sent a leadoff hit through the right side before stealing second. Sophomore
Caroline Jacobsen singled to left and advanced on an error as Kavel crossed home plate to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
Using two hits and capitalizing on an overthrow, Campbell evened the game at 1-1 in the third. The Blue Devils answered with a standup RBI triple from Kavel (2-1) who later scored on a passed ball (3-1).
Campbell gained its first lead of the evening in the fourth, using a two-run home run and three singles to plate five runs (6-3). The Camels couldn't hold onto their lead as Duke tied its single-game record of 10 runs in an inning during the bottom of the fifth.
The Blue Devils garnered nine hits, four of which were doubles, while Jacobsen launched her third homer of the season.
Rachel Crabtree,
Gisele Tapia,
Raine Wilson and
Kristina Foreman each recorded a double while both Crabtree and Foreman went 2-for-2 in the inning. Joining Crabtree and Forman with singles were
Jazmine Moreno and
Kendyl Lange.
Heading into the sixth with a 13-6 advantage, Campbell's Kayla Fredendall hit her second long ball of the night to score the Camels' final run (13-7). Duke tied its record for doubles in a game with six
as Kyla Morris and Lange each notched one in the bottom half. Foreman secured the Blue Devils' fourth run-rule victory of the season with a RBI single up the middle to win 15-7.
Sophomore
Shelby Walters got the start in the circle, going 4.1 innings while tallying six strikeouts.
Peyton St. George faced three batters before Butler took over, only letting up two hits in the final 1.1 frames of the contest.
The Blue Devils head to Austin for the Texas Invitational on Friday, Feb. 21-22 where they will face Lipscomb, Weber State, North Dakota State and No. 4 Texas. All games will be streamed on the Longhorn Network.
