AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta Sports Council and Ray Guy Award announced redshirt freshman punter Porter Wilson was named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2020 Ray Guy Award, the organization announced Monday.
Â
A native of Fairlawn, Ohio, Wilson stepped into the starting role in 2020 after former All-ACC punter Austin Parker graduated. In his first year taking the reins, Wilson has booted 48 punts for 2,072 yards, averaging 43.17 yards per punt. He has impressively pinned 21 punts inside the 20-yard line and boasts 11 punts of 50-plus yards. Only 15 of his 48 punts have been returned this season for a total of six yards to average 0.40 yards per return.
Â
Wilson was previously named to Ray's 4 for Week 13 after launching six punts for a total of 264 yards, an average of 44.0 yards per punt, against Georgia Tech. His first punt of the evening traveled a career-long 70 yards before being downed at the Yellow Jackets' 10-yard line. Wilson's second punt led to Duke's first score as it was muffed and recovered in the end zone. Overall, Wilson put four of his six punts inside the 20 and totaled -5 return yards on two returns.
In addition to Ray Guy Award honors, Wilson was also named to the Freshman All-America watch list. Most recently, he earned ACC Co-Specialist of the Week honors on Dec. 7, after his performance against Miami.
Â
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thompson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
