DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women's basketball junior Miela Goodchild collected a season-high 24 points and the Blue Devils defeated East Carolina, 72-47, Saturday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium to improve to 3-0 under the direction of head coach Kara Lawson.
Goodchild finished the contest hitting 6-of-10 three-pointers, while grabbing five rebounds in 25 minutes.
The Blue Devils got off to another good start in the contest leading by a 15-0 ledger as Duke hit 6-of-10 field goals to start the contest. Duke went on to lead 24-4 at the end of the first quarter as the Blue Devil defense held the Pirates to 13.3 percent shooting on 2-of-15 field goals.
Duke hit 64.3 percent from the field in the first and drained four treys. Sophomore Jaida Patrick, who hails from West Haverstraw, N.Y., paced the Blue Devils with seven points and four rebounds.
The four points by East Carolina in the first quarter was tied for the fewest allowed by the Blue Devils in the first quarter in school history.
At the 6:12 mark of the first quarter, senior Mikayla Boykin made her 2020-21 debut.
Duke picked up where it left off in the first quarter as the Blue Devils hit 8-of-16 field goals and 5-of-8 treys on their way to taking a 45-17 lead into halftime.
Goodchild, a native of Queensland, Australia, hit four three-pointers and scored 12 points in the second quarter on her way to finishing the first half with a game-high 19 points on 5-of-8 treys.
The Blue Devils hit 9-of-16 treys in the first half and was sizzling from the field with a 56.7 percentage.
Duke struggled a little in the third period, but still outscored the Pirates, 17-12. East Carolina would go on to outscore the Blue Devils 18-10 in the fourth period.
The Blue Devils hit 50.0 percent from the field for the second time out of three games to open the season, while finishing the contest with 11 made three-pointers. Over the last two games, Duke has drained 24 three-pointers.
Patrick finished the contest with 11 points, to go along with a career-high eight rebounds and career-high six assists. Boykin, who hails from Clinton, N.C., added 10 points, a career-high eight boards, four steals and two assists in 16 minutes. Senior Jade Williams chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Synia Johnson led East Carolina (1-3) with nine points.
Duke will next open ACC action Wednesday, Dec. 9 as the Blue Devils host fifth-ranked Louisville at 7 p.m., live on RSN-TV from Cameron Indoor Stadium.
