DURHAM, N.C.—On November 5, 2006 Mike Grella did Mike Grella things and led the Blue Devils to their second consecutive ACC Championship. The sophomore scored the game-winning goal in the seventh minute of overtime to beat No. 1 Wake Forest, 1-0.
Grella's individual effort was nothing short of spectacular and marked his 11th goal of the season. The year prior, he scored the game-winning penalty kick in the shootout victory for the ACC title.
The Blue Devils and Demon Deacons were even on the stat sheet with Wake Forest holding a slight edge, 12-11, in shots. Duke put six on frame to Wake Forest's three and Justin Papadakis had three saves for the Blue Devils in goal. Sophomore defender Graham Dugoni also had a significant save, clearing a ball off the goal line midway through the second half.
