The Battle for the Victory Bell began in 1948 with North Carolina first earning possession following a 20-0 win ... Head cheerleaders from Duke (Loring Jones) and North Carolina (Norman Sper) decided on the idea, with Jones designing the model and Sper obtaining a bell from an old railroad train ... Red Lewis, Duke's business manager, agreed to find money in the budget to pay for the bell.
In Duke's last game against Charlotte, senior DE Victor Dimukeje shifted closer to breaking a Blue Devil program record … he needs just 1.0 sack to eclipse Charles Bowser's all-time school standard (22.0) as he currently sits with 21.5 to his name.
Dimukeje and fellow DE Chris Rumph IIare the first set of teammates to post 7.5+ sacks in a single season in Duke history … with 7.5 sacks each in 2020, Dimukeje and Rumph II rank tied for seventh on Duke's single-season list and are tops in the ACC.Â
Against Charlotte, the running back duo of Deon Jackson and Mataeo Durantboth surpassed 100+ yards rushing for the second time this season ... this marked just the second time in program history the same two players registered 100+ rushing yards in the same game on multiple occasions during a single season (1976: Art Gore and Mike Dunn against NC State and North Carolina).
CUTCLIFFE, DUKE IN NOVEMBER
Duke is 15-33 in the month of November under David Cutcliffe ... at home, the Blue Devils are 8-16 ... against ACC opponents this month Duke is 15-31.Â
TAKING OWNERSHIP OF THE OFFENSE
Since transferring in from Clemson, redshirt junior Chase Brice has taken the helm of the offense after being named Duke's QB1 … in his first seven career starts, Brice has compiled 136-of-247 (.551) passes for 1,567 yards with seven TDs ... the Grayson, Ga., native sits sixth in the ACC with a 223.9 passing average per game mark, while his 236.4 yards of total offense per outing places him eighth in the conference.Â
His 136 completions are the second-most in the ACC behind Boston College's Phil Jurkovec (152) … in five of his seven games this season, Brice has competed 20+ passes, including a season-high 24 against NC State … during his short Duke tenure, Brice has registered 28 total passes of 15+ yards and has recorded at least six passes of 15+ yards in three of seven games this year (seven vs. Notre Dame, six vs. Virginia & Virginia Tech).Â
2K CAREER GROUND YARDS
As Duke's leading returning rusher from a season ago,Deon Jackson was tabbed a preseason third team All-ACC selection by Athlon Sports heading into his final season ... he is also a candidate for the Doak Walker and Paul Hornung Awards.Â
In Duke's game at NC State, Jackson became the eighth Blue Devil to surpass the 2,000 rushing yard mark during his career … his 2,132 career yards place him seventh all-time and he is 309 yards away from breaking into the top-five … his 484 rushing attempts place him seventh in program lore as well.
Jackson is averaging 78.14 rushing yards per game this season to rank ninth in the ACC … his 547 yards via the ground game this season has him seventh in the conference and 17th nationally.Â
RUN GAME
The running back duo of Deon Jackson and Mataeo Durantboth recorded 100+ rushing yards against Syracuse and Charlotte ... this marked just the third time in program history Duke had two players rush for over 100+ yards in the same game on multiple occasions throughout a season (1976 & 1975) ... the 1976 season was the only other time the Blue Devils saw the same two players achieve that mark (Art Gore and Mike Dunn against NC State and North Carolina) ... the twosome also recorded Duke's 16th contest with at least two players reaching 100+ rushing yards in the same game.
Jackson leads the team with 547 rushing yards on the year, but Durant follows closely with 460 yards … both have multiple TDs on the year with four and five, respectively … Duke joins North Carolina and Wake Forest as the only three ACC schools with two running backs with over 460+ rushing yards.
BOBO BIG UNDER PRESSURE
Junior WR Jake Bobo is quickly becoming Duke's top target when it needs to extend drives … the Belmont, Mass., native has 22 catches on the year, 19 of those have been for first downs … of the other three, one went for a touchdown leaving just two receptions that didn't result in a first down or a score … ironically, both of those misses were receptions for nine yards.
TACKLES FOR LOSS
In 2019, Duke had five players register six or more tackles for loss, led by DE Chris Rumph IIwho recorded a team-best 13.5 ... DE Victor Dimukeje and LB Shaka Heywardare the other two returning players on the list with 9.5 and 6.5 TFL, respectively, last season ... Rumph II ranked eighth in the ACC with his 13.5 TFL.Â
In 2020, Rumph II, Dimukeje and Heyward have already recorded multiple TFL with 7.5, 7.5 and 5.0, respectively ... Derrick Tangelo(4.0 TFL), Marquis Waters(3.0 TFL), Rocky Shelton II (3.0 TFL), Ben Frye (3.0 TFL), Drew Jordan (2.0 TFL), and Jeremiah Lewis (1.5 TFL) round out the remaining Blue Devils with 1.5+ TFL on the year.
Dimukeje and Rumph II both find themselves ranked in the ACC's top-10 in this category … Rumph II is fifth with 1.36 TFL per game, while Dimukeje is ninth averaging 1.21 per outing … Duke is the only school in the ACC with at least two players with 8.5 TFL and 7.5 sacks each.Â
Dimukje is a candidate for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Chuck Bednarik Award, and the Lott IMPACT Trophy ... in 45 career games, Dimukeje has 149 tackles, 33.0 TFL, 21.5 sacks, one INT, five caused fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and 27 QB pressures ... Jordan holds 89 tackles, 12.5 TFL, 8.5 sacks, one caused fumble, three fumble recoveries and 12 QB pressures in 44 career games.
Dimukeje and Rumph II are currently tied for first in the nation with 7.5 sacks on the year … the twosome combined to have 15.0 sacks between them and make the Blue Devils just one of only two ACC schools to have two players combined for 11.0+ sacks on the year (Pittsburgh [11.5]).Â
DEFENSIVE PRESSURE
The Blue Devils currently rank seventh in the ACC in rushing defense allowing just 155.1 yards per game … Duke also finds itself seventh in the league in total defense giving up 393.0 yards per outing … finally the Blue Devils rank third in the conference and 10th nationally, averaging 3.71 sacks per contest … their 26 total sacks and 161 sack yards on the year place them third in the country.
Redshirt sophomoreJeremiah Lewisis third in the ACC with 1.29 passes defended per game … as a unit, Duke's six interceptions on the year are tied with Boston College, North Carolina, NC State and Virginia for sixth in the conference.Â
THE GUNNERS
Duke's punt return coverage team has been a highlight so far this season and it's been led by two unlikely players: freshmen Jaylen Stinsonand Da'Quan Johnson ... both rookies have seen action in all seven games, mostly on special teams, as the Blue Devils' two gunners ... Stinson has compiled eight tackles, including recovering a muffed punt and returning it for a touchdown against Virginia Tech ... Johnson earned his first career tackles (four) against Charlotte during Duke's last outing ... the twosome leads a punt return coverage unit that has limited its opponents to two punt return yards on eight attempts.Â
BLOCK PARTY
Freshman Isaiah Fisher-Smith has quickly made a name for himself by creating havoc on special teams ... the Greensboro, N.C., native has two blocked punts in as many games and added a recovery of a blocked punt during Duke's last outing ... he became the first player at Duke to block multiple kicks in a single season since Mike Ramsay did so in 2017 ... Darrell Harding Jr., holds the Blue Devils' only other blocked kick on the year (punt).
