DURHAM, N.C.—Benjamin Franklin said there were two things certain in life: death and taxes. We'd like to add a third – a one-goal thriller in the Duke Outdoor Lacrosse League (D.O.L.L.).
The fourth week of the D.O.L.L. wrapped up with another one-goal game as McSallies came away with the 12-11 overtime victory over Peithos. It was a heartbreaking setback for Peithos as senior
Matt Chmil hit the left pipe as time expired, giving McSallies another life.
Michael Sowers scored the winner for the visiting squad after Peithos won the opening faceoff in overtime. Sowers also had the tying goal with 1:22 remaining to send it to overtime. The win pushes McSallies to 3-1 in the D.O.L.L
Rookie faceoff specialist
Jake Naso was arguably the surprise of the night as he registered a hat trick for Peithos.
Hitting the field on chilly Halloween Eve in Durham, the game got off to a spooky slow start with neither team able to score in the first six minutes.
McSallies, staying with the all black uniforms, jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from
Owen Caputo and
JP Basile. While it took nearly nine minutes for Peithos to score for the first time – a rifle from
Nakeie Montgomery – it didn't take long for them to score often. The home squad, back in the classic white and blue unis, added three more goals in the next 2:24 for a 4-2 lead with 3:42 left in the first frame.
Sowers answered 41 seconds later to bring McSallies back within one, 4-3, and bringing the first quarter to a close.
McSallies' sophomore
Michael Swirbalus tied the game at 11:07 and then the goalies – Mike Adler for McSallies and
Turner Uppgren for Peithos – and the team defenses took over. Neither team was able to score a goal for over 10 minutes as it took a feed from
Brennan O'Neill to
Dyson Williams with 5.4 seconds left to give Peithos the 5-4 halftime advantage.
The scoring continued to lag under the full moon in the third quarter. Graduate student
Sean Lowrie tied the game for McSallies. The back-and-forth continued with
Joey Manown and
Will Frisoli chipping in two more for a 7-5 McSallies advantage.
Naso stopped the black team's run with his second goal off the draw of the night and then senior
Cameron Badour tied it at 7-7 less than a minute into the final frame.
The game of runs continued with McSallies getting goals from
Owen Caputo and Sowers for a 9-7 lead. Rookie
Aidan Danenza scrapped for a ground ball and threw one in to bring
it back to 9-8 and then Lowrie again stretched the McSallies' lead back to two, 10-8.
Peithos refused to go away and continued to find ways to score. Naso tied it at 10 and then O'Neill gave the home squad the 11-10 advantage with 2:30 to play and setting up the thrilling final 1:30.
Week five of practices starts Monday for the Blue Devils. And like death and taxes, another competitive one-goal game in the D.O.L.L. is certainly on the horizon.
