DURHAM, N.C.—Duke graduate student
Jack Doran and freshman
Lewis McGarvey collected weekly honors after both tallied goals in Duke's 3-1 road victory at NC State Friday night. Doran was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week and McGarvey earned recognition on the College Soccer News Team of the Week. These are the first weekly awards for both players.
McGarvey, Duke's best aerial ball winner, gave Duke the 1-0 lead with a header over the NC State goalkeeper early in the second half. He played the full 90 minutes for the fourth straight game, helping the Blue Devils command possession in the middle of the field.
Doran scored Duke's second goal, putting the perfect touch on a free kick to go between the legs of NC State goalkeeper Leon Krapf. The veteran captain was outstanding all around as the Blue Devils controlled the run of play throughout the midfield against the Wolfpack. Doran has two goals on the year after scoring just one in his previous 37 games in 2017 and 2018. He has started all four games for the Blue Devils, compiling 295 of the 380 overall minutes.
"The graduate student is one of Duke's most experienced players, crucial for a side starting several freshmen." said Top Drawer Soccer of Doran. "He tallied in a 3-1 win against
NC State on Friday night, finishing the evening with an 80% rate of passes completed."
Joining Doran with an honorable mention nod is rookie
Nick Pariano. The freshman midfielder provided the assist on Doran's goal and his free kick deflection that resulted in the insurance goal as well. Pariano earned Team of the Week honors two weeks ago after he scored with 34 seconds left in the second overtime to beat NC State in Durham.
Duke (2-2, 2-1 ACC) continues its demanding ACC slate Friday at Clemson. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m., on ACC Network.
