HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Battling through another long day of rain delays, Duke men's tennis secured its first win of the 2020 season as the Blue Devils topped Hawai'i, 4-1, Wednesday evening at the UH Tennis Complex.

Andrew Zhang clinched the match with a three-set comeback win (2-6, 6-1, 6-4) at No. 4 singles.

With the victory, Duke (1-0) won its sixth-straight season opener while Hawai'i (0-1) was handed its first loss of 2020. Due to weather, the teams chose to forego doubles play.

Samuel Rubell cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph on court five, recording the first point of the match and the first win of his dual career at Duke. Junior
Luca Keist fought through the second set, but couldn't overcome Andre Illagan at No. 1 singles, falling 6-1, 7-6 (6).

Garrett Johns added another point for the Blue Devils as he commanded a 6-0, 6-4 victory on court six. At No. 2 singles,
Edu Güell began his junior campaign in the win column (7-5, 6-3) to put the Blue Devils on the cusp of victory with a 3-1 edge.

After dropping the first set, Zhang bounced back in the second with a strong 6-1 win. Nearing the end of the third frame, the match was sent into a rain delay. Staying focused, Zhang closed out the contest with a 6-4 victory to give Duke its first win of the season. Zhang finished the fall season ranked No. 117 in the final ITA rankings.

Spencer Furman fell 6-3 in set one but responded with a 7-5 win in the second. Tied at 3-3 in the third stanza, the match at No. 3 singles went unfinished.

Duke begins its 12-match homestand with contests against UNCW and North Carolina A&T on Saturday, Jan. 18. The Blue Devils will face the Seahawks at 12 p.m. before taking on the Aggies at 6 p.m. in the Sheffield Tennis Center.
