DURHAM, N.C. – It was announced Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) that Duke women's tennis will enter the 2020 season as the fifth-ranked squad in the country.
Stanford, which concluded the 2019 season ranked No. 1, captured the top spot, while North Carolina (tied for second), Georgia (tied for second), UCLA (fourth) and Duke (fifth) round out the top-five. In addition to the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels, other ACC Schools that earned a spot among the top-25 include NC State (No. 8), Florida State (No. 16), Virginia (No. 20), Miami (No. 23) and Wake Forest (No. 24).
Last season, Duke posted an overall record of 27-4 and went 13-1 in conference play. The 2019 campaign featured Duke in the finals of the ACC Championship and the semifinals of the NCAA Team Championship as well as the ITA Indoor National Championship. The Blue Devils reached the semifinals of the team championship for the 10th time and for the second consecutive season.
The fall season proved to be successful for Duke with four players on the singles list and one doubles team ranked in the ITA polls in November.
Coming in with the highest Blue Devil ranking is junior
Kelly Chen, locking in at No. 10. Chen finished the fall with a 14-5 overall ledger and went 5-4 against ranked opponents. Most recently at the ITA Fall National Championships, Chen defeated three ranked foes en route to the quarterfinals of the singles main draw.
Rookie
Chloe Beck earned Duke's second-highest ranking at No. 25. Beck was previously unranked heading into the start of the fall season and defeated four ranked opponents to compile a 10-3 overall ledger. At the ITA All-American Championships in October, Beck entered the tournament in the qualifying singles draw and worked her way into the main draw by defeating six ranked opponents. She ultimately fell in the semifinals.
Sophomore
Margaryta Bilokin and senior
Meible Chi round out Duke's singles players with Bilokin at No. 67 and Chi at No. 77. Bilokin played to an 8-4 ledger, while Chi went 6-3 overall.
Duke was also represented on the doubles list with Beck and Chi checking in at No. 35. The duo played to a 3-2 ledger this fall, including 1-1 against nationally ranked foes.
The Blue Devils kick off the 2020 season Jan. 14 in Phoenix, Ariz., at Grand Canyon.
