DURHAM, N.C. — A host of Blue Devils will be waiting to hear their names called this Thursday during the 2020 MLS SuperDraft. The first and second rounds begin at 12:30 p.m., Jan. 9 and be streamed on Twitter as well as on the ESPN App, YouTube and Facebook.
Blue Devil seniors
Daniele Proch,
Sergi Nus and
Brandon Williamson are potential draft picks, with Williamson being tabbed in the No. 26 slot in the early MLS Mock Draft.
Major League Soccer has unveiled a new format this year as rounds one and two of the 2020 SuperDraft will be conducted during a jointly produced MLS and ESPN show that starts at 12:30 p.m. (ET), Thursday, Jan. 9. The show will stream live on Twitter with an itinerary that includes a live stream and real-time highlights from the event all in one comprehensive experience. That includes, according to Major League Soccer, cameras embedded with players and club decision-makers and live look-ins on club draft rooms.
There are four rounds in total with each of the 26 clubs having one pick per round. Some of the selections have already changed hands via trades. The third and fourth rounds will be held Jan. 13 via conference call.
Proch has participated in various sessions with MLS clubs since the Duke season concluded, including the MLS College Showcase held in Raleigh in conjunction with the College Cup. The Italy native was Duke's leading scorer the past two seasons and garnered All-America honors in 2018.
Williamson also was invited to participate in the MLS College Showcase after a solid career as the Blue Devils' midfield leader and quarterback. He was listed as the No. 21 pick in the Top Drawer Soccer Mock Draft 1.0 and 26th by MLS's Travis Clark. Williamson can play a diverse set of positions and is being looked at as a right back after spending his entire collegiate career in the center midfield.
Nus, a graduate student transfer to Duke from Virginia, also has traveled for sessions with MLS clubs. A two-time All-ACC defender, Nus was in and out of the lineup this season for the Blue Devils after a strong career with the Cavaliers. He was a two-year starter for Virginia, helping the Cavaliers to 16 shutouts.
Most picks will enter training camp with the clubs that drafted them, but not all will sign contracts to go on an MLS roster. Some players who don't make an MLS roster may also end up signing for an MLS team's USL squad.
Duke has had four players selected in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft since it first was held in 2001. In addition, the Blue Devils have had a collection of players sign homegrown contracts, including New York Red Bulls' Sean Davis and Sebastien Ibeagha.
There are four former Blue Devils currently on MLS rosters. Brian White, Sean Davis, Sebastien Ibeagha and Jeremy Ebobisse all will be suiting up for their teams for the 2020 campaign.
