DURHAM, N.C. – Building off another strong season, "Team Three" of Duke softball is preparing for the 2020 campaign.
The Blue Devils open their season with the Black and Gold Invitational at the University of Central Florida on Feb. 7-9 before their home opener during the Big Ten/ACC Challenge the following weekend (Feb. 14-16).
Receiving 74 points, Duke was predicted to finished eighth in the 2020 ACC Softball Preseason Coaches' Poll. The top three consists of Florida State with 10 first-place votes, followed by Virginia Tech in second with two and Notre Dame in third with one.
"Eighth isn't where we want to be, but it's not about where you start but how you finish," said head coach
Marissa Young. "We have a great group of girls who are committed to being an elite program."
Following two seasons of play, Duke holds a 54-58 overall record while going .500 (24-24) in ACC action. In 2019, the Blue Devils posted a 25-31 record and finished sixth after its second consecutive appearance in the ACC Tournament.
Duke returns 14 letterwinners from 2019, while adding five newcomers to the roster. During fall ball, Young announced three captains for the 2020 season:
Raine Wilson,
Rachel Crabtree and
Deja Davis. This is the second season Wilson and Crabtree serve as captains while it's Davis' first.
FRESH FACES
The Blue Devils added three freshmen to their roster with
Felise Collins,
Kamryn Jackson and
Giesle Tapia. Collins is a utility player while Jackson and Collins will play in the infield. Young pulled in two junior transfers as
Kendyl Lange joins from UCF and
Sydney Bolan from Central Connecticut State.
Young's squad looks to improve numbers across the board while continuing its strong pitching, base running and defensive performances from last season.
PITCHING STAFF
Only losing one player, Duke returns five pitchers to its staff for the year, including All-ACC Second Team selection,
Peyton St. George. Young utilized her staff last year as St. George,
Brianna Butler and
Shelby Walters each saw nearly 90+ innings, combining for a 3.47 earned run average and racking up 284 strikeouts. St. George accumulated the lowest ERA on the team (2.58) while posting an 8-7 record with a team-high 90 K's.
SPEEDY ON THE BASES
The Blue Devils stole 69 bases on 80 attempts in the 2019 campaign for fifth best in the league. Davis headed the charge for Duke, successfully stealing 24 of 25 bases while
Jameson Kavel went 14-of-15. Duke's 19 triples were second best in the league, ninth in the country, behind Louisville's 31 as Kavel and Davis combined for 13.
LOCKED IN DEFENSE
Duke led the conference last season with a .973 fielding percentage with 1143 putouts, 503 assists and only 45 errors – the fewest in the ACC. Duke's .973 clip ranks 23rd in the country among 295 teams with help from Crabtree's .993 percentage at first base (439-10-3). Behind the plate,
Jazmine Moreno was atop the ACC when it came to throwing out runners as she caught 13 in 2019.
