DURHAM, N.C. – Gene Corrigan, a member of the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame, passed away overnight in Charlottesville, Va., at the age of 91.
A 1952 graduate of Duke, Corrigan was a two-time honorable mention All-America selection as a member of the Blue Devil lacrosse team. He went on to a career in college athletics with stints as the Director of Athletics at both the University of Virginia and University of Notre Dame in addition to a 10-year tenure as the commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference. A native of Baltimore, Md., who served an 18-month stint in the U.S. Army after graduating from Loyola High School, Corrigan also served as the president of the NCAA from 1995-97.
In addition to earning induction into the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991, Corrigan was recognized by numerous organizations for his exemplary service and achievement including the National Football Foundation's highest honor – the Gold Medal (1996), Duke University Alumnus of the Year (1996), National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1993, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
Corrigan is survived by his wife of 66 years Lena, children Louise (Scott Wawner), Kathryn (Tony Zentgraf); David (Jean), Kevin (Lis), Brian (Kathy), Timothy (Jackie) and Boo (Kristen), 19 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
