DURHAM, N.C. – Duke men's tennis is set to host Campbell on Friday, Jan. 24. First serve versus the Camels is slated for 6 p.m. in the Sheffield Tennis Center. Â
Â
HISTORY WITH CAMPBELL
Duke holds a 5-0 advantage in the all-time series with Campbell. The Blue Devils and Camels haven't met in nearly 27 years as the two programs last faced off on Feb. 13, 1993 when Duke picked up a 5-1 win.
Â
The two teams crossed paths during the fall at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships and Wake Forest Invitational. Freshman
Michael Heller topped Campbell's Bastien Huon in three sets (5-7, 6-2, 6-2) during the ITA Carolina Regional Round of 32 before senior
Spencer Furman defeated Huon (1-6, 6-2, 6-4) in the A2 Draw West Quarterfinals at the Wake Forest Invitational.
Â
SCOUTING THE CAMELS
The Camels begin their 2020 campaign against the Blue Devils, returning four seniors and one junior from last year's team that compiled a 16-6 with a second-place finish at the 2019 Big South Championship. Key returners – Huon, Raphael Calzi and Ondrej Labik – primarily played at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Â
Â
ACC DOUBLES DUO OF THE WEEK
Playing for the first time together, Furman and
Luca Keist were named the ACC Doubles Team of the Week after going 3-0 on court one over the long weekend. The tandem took down UNCW's Bruno Caula and Groom who were No. 36 in the ITA doubles rankings before defeating opponents from North Carolina A&T and Elon.
Â
FOUR STRAIGHT WINS
The Blue Devils are off to their hottest start since the 2015 season when Duke opened with a nine-match win streak. Duke has only given up four points among its four victories as it recently notched three consecutive 6-1 victories.
Â
UP NEXT
Following tomorrow's match, Duke returns to action next Friday, Jan. 31, against Illinois. The Fighting Illini, who were ranked 12th in the latest Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Rankings, will play the Blue Devils at 6 p.m. in Sheffield.
