Blue Devils Cruise Past Phoenix

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke men's tennis extended its strong start to the 2020 dual season with a commanding 6-1 victory over Elon on Monday afternoon in the Sheffield Tennis Center.

Following three wins over the long weekend, the Blue Devils (4-0) are off to their best start since the 2015 campaign when Duke opened with a nine-match win streak.

"It was a great weekend overall," said head coach Ramsey Smith. "I thought we had a good week at practice – both individuals and team – and the guys worked really hard which showed in all three matches. I thought we played another really good match today and it was nice to see how we reacted playing two matches two days ago."

Despite the Phoenix putting pressure on the Blue Devils, Duke started the match strong with Nick Stachowiak and Garrett Johns picking up a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles. Luca Keist and Spencer Furman clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Kyle Frankel and Camino Ponce on court one.

Heading into singles play with a 1-0 advantage, Edu Güell dominated Ponce on court two for a 6-1, 6-0 victory while Johns followed with a 6-3, 6-1 feat on court six. Furman clinched the Blue Devils' fourth straight win with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph on court four.

Samuel Rubell's 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles put Duke up 5-0, leaving courts one and two to finish. After cruising through the first set (6-0), Stachowiak battled for a 7-5 victory over Frankel on court one while Keist fell short to Condos in a super tiebreaker on court two (3-6, 6-4, 10-3).

The Blue Devils will return to action on Friday, Jan. 24, for a 6 p.m. match against Campbell in the Sheffield Tennis Center.
