DURHAM, N.C. – Following the 2020 opening weekend at the Penn State Duals, the Duke fencing team will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 18 for the Philadelphia Invitational at the Tse Ping-Cheng Cheung Ling Sports Center on Penn's campus.
The Blue Devils will face off against Cornell, Haverford, Lafayette, North Carolina, NJIT, NYU, Penn and Sacred Heart.
Last year's Philadelphia Invitational was cut short due to inclement weather impacting the state, but the Blue Devils still picked up victories over Sacred Heart (25-2), Brown (21-8) and Penn (14-13). On the men's side, Duke picked up wins over Haverford (21-6), Brown (19-8) and Penn (16-11).
Duke will look to carry its momentum from last weekend as junior
Julia Gianneschi and sophomore
Alex Gorman led the entire team with 12 victories in foil and saber, respectively, while rookie
Bowen Wang added 11 wins and only four losses in men's epee.
Gianneschi was named ACC Female Fencer of the Week following her efforts last weekend where she captured the winning point in Duke's 14-13 battle against Yale.
Duke will return to action following this weekend Feb. 1 at the Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Ill.
