DURHAM, N.C. – Head Coach
Marissa Young of Duke softball concludes her six-player 2019 fall signing class with Florida native,
Kelly Torres.
Torres, a catcher and third baseman, has played at American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla., under head coach Marty Cooper since sixth grade. Over the past few years, Torres has helped the program to two 6A State Championships while finishing in second two years.
As a freshman, Torres produced a .409 batting average and a .636 slugging percentage with seven runs batted in. Torres had another strong season at the plate during her sophomore campaign, racking up 25 RBI while hitting .391 at the plate to earn First Team All-County honors as well as the Patriot Award. Torres proved her consistency as a junior, batting .368 with 19 RBI as she picked up a First Team All-County nod for the second-straight season.
On the travel ball scene, Torres has been with the Gold Coast Hurricanes the past four years. During her time with the team, she's played catcher, third base and in the outfield. In the summer of 2019, Torres recorded a .427 batting average, while bringing in 28 runs and hitting three home runs.
Off the field, Torres is a co-vice president of the UNICEF Club and was inducted into the National Honor Society as junior while receiving high honors from freshman to senior year. Aside from softball, Torres lettered in bowling as a senior and was selected a team captain.
Born Kelly Lauren Torres on July 30, 2001 in Davie, Fla., she is the daughter of John Torres and Dr. Kelly Insignares. She has one brother, Kyle Torres (21), who is a sailor in the U.S. Navy.
