STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Duke fencing team kicked off the 2020 slate Sunday at the Penn State Duals in State College, Pa., as the Blue Devil women turned in a 3-3 overall performance while the men fenced to a 2-3 showing.
The Blue Devil women picked up wins over Haverford (27-0), Penn (15-12) and Yale (14-13) and fell to 2019 NCAA Champions Columbia (14-13), Penn State (15-12) and Temple (15-12). On the men's side, Duke topped Haverford (23-4) and Yale (19-8) and lost to Columbia (17-10), Penn (15-12) and Penn State (15-12).
Both the saber and foil squads on the women's side went 4-2 on the day while the epee and foil posted a 4-1 record for the men.
Junior
Julia Gianneschi and sophomore
Alex Gorman led the entire team with 12 victories in foil and saber, respectively, while rookie
Bowen Wang added 11 wins and only four losses in men's epee. Gianneschi captured the winning point in Duke's 14-13 battle on the strips against Yale.
Freshman
Ashley Lo helped pace the women's foil contingent alongside Gianneschi with 10 wins while
Brycen Rushing and
Ben Stone each added nine victories for men's foil and men's saber, respectively.
Maria Papadopoulos,
Julia Noguchi,
Lindsay Sapienza,
Agoston Walter and
Ping Ping Kitsiriboon also had strong showings with eight victories across the three weapons.
