INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Boosted by three under par rounds, Duke University freshman
Erica Shepherd finished as the low amateur at the LPGA Indy Women in Tech Championship over the last four days, which was being played at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
It marked the third straight year Shepherd had made the cut on the LPGA event and she turned in a career-best tied for 39
th finish with rounds of 70, 74, 70 and 70 for a four-under-par, 284. She closed the weekend with back-to-back rounds of two-under, 70, boosted by nine birdies.
"The past two years, I've kind of blown up the last day, so just to stay steady and try to go as low as I could today," Shepherd said. "It worked out for me today. It's sad that this is the last year for it, but it was a good three years."
In Sunday's final round, Shepherd totaled early birdies on No. 11, No. 13 and No. 15 to get to three-under-par for the day. After back-to-back bogeys on No. 17 and No. 18, she closed the final nine holes with a one-under ledger with birdies on No. 2 and No. 8. She hit 10 fairways, 11 greens and 27 putts in the final round.
"I think I just don't like those holes, honestly." Commented Shepherd on making the turn after bogeying No. 17 and No. 18. "The 18 drive, I've never felt comfortable over that shot. Honestly, 18 was a good bogey; my second shot ended up plugging the bunker. So just to make bogey there and walk on to the new nine, that was okay."
Mi Jung Hur won the title with a 21-under score of 267.
Former Duke standouts Brittany Lang placed tied for 25
th with a 282, while Yu Liu tied for 31
st with a 283.
Following the LPGA Indy Women in Tech Championship, Shepherd will travel to Chicago, Ill., to compete with the Blue Devils in the Windy City Collegiate, which will take place Sept. 30 through Oct. 1. It will mark her second collegiate event. Duke will open action Monday at 8:39 a.m., off hole No. 10.
"It'll be tough to get through 36 tomorrow," Shepherd said after finishing Sunday, "but I'll take a good nap in the car, and we'll see what happens."
