DURHAM, N.C. – Despite the Duke volleyball team posting 22 blocks Sunday afternoon, the Blue Devils fell to Miami 3-1 (21-25, 19-25, 25-20, 21-25) in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the loss, Duke drops to 7-8 overall and 0-2 in the ACC.
"We need to figure out how to produce more offensively," head coach
Jolene Nagel said. "As a team, we have to compete from the start. I don't think we competed from the start today … I think we played and did okay, but we didn't compete from the very beginning."
Outside hitter
Ade Owokoniran had 10 kills to pace Duke's offense while setters
Camille Nazor and
Sarah Nelson dished 16 and 15 assists, respectively. Duke was dominant at the net with 22 total blocks as rookie
Lizzie Fleming accounted for seven, including two solo blocks.
The Blue Devils were unable to find their rhythm offensively in the first two sets with just 14 kills total and were unable to shut down Miami's 26 kills. For the game, Duke was limited to a .182 hitting percentage over four sets while the Hurricanes hit .205.
Miami headlined three players with double-digit kills that included Elizaveta Lukianova with 17 kills and just four errors to hit .433 for the match.
Behind a .500 hitting percentage in the third set, the Blue Devils forced a fourth set. Fleming, Cooper, Owokoniran and Cline tallied three consecutive points with blocks to cut into Miami's lead (11-9) before back-to-back kills from Miami's Madison Dill to push Miami ahead.
Aside from Lukianova, Miami was led by Janet Kalaniuvalu with 16 kills and Kennedy Prince with 11.
Duke hits the road to take on Boston College and Syracuse Oct. 4 and 6. The match against the Orange will be on RSN.
