PORTLAND, Ore. -- Junior
Evan Katz carded a bogey-free, three-under 68 to pace the Duke men's golf team in the opening round of the Nike Collegiate Invitational Sunday at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Portland, Ore.
Katz is three off the individual lead held by Oklahoma's Logan McAllister through 18 holes, with junior teammate
Adrien Pendaries one stroke back thanks to his two-under 68. Katz's blemish-free round was one of just three in the field on Sunday in wet and cool conditions.
"I knew today was going to be mentally challenging just because the weather is so different from what we've been used to," said Katz. "So I just wanted to really take it one moment at a time and enjoy the challenge. I felt I did a good job of staying focused on the challenge at hand, and will try to keep doing that same thing tomorrow."
As a team, Duke posted an even-par 284 and sits ninth in the 15-team field that includes eight ranked programs. Oklahoma's 14-under 270 leads the tournament, followed by Oklahoma State (-8), Texas (-6), Clemson (-6) and Wake Forest (-5) in the top five.
"Evan and Adrien played some very steady and quality golf today," said head coach
Jamie Green. "Especially Evan's round, which was bogey free. Being able to lift and clean your golf ball in closely-mown areas today made a big impact on scoring since the greens are soft and receptive. It wasn't surprising to see a few really low team rounds up there because of that."
Katz's birdies came on the par-5 fourth, the par-four sixth and the par-four 13th. He went out in 34 and came home in 34. Pendaries' round of 69 saw the junior close out the front with back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth, with his third birdie on the par-5 11th.
Senior
Steven DiLisio had a strong round of one-under before finding trouble on the par-5 18th and posting a two-over 73. Sophomore
Quinn Riley played his final six holes in two-under par and signed for an opening-round, three-over 74. Senior
Chandler Eaton shot a five-over 76.
"There is a lot of golf still to play on a magnificent course," said Green. "Nike and Pumpkin Ridge do such a great job hosting this event and the next two days should be really fun for the Blue Devils."
Duke is paired with Vanderbilt and Florida for Monday's second round and off at 8 a.m. PT (11 a.m. ET). Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
