DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis program is excited to announce the hiring of
Michelle Dasso to the staff, who will serve as the associate head coach under head coach
Jamie Ashworth.
"I am humbled to join the Duke staff," Dasso said. "The consistent level of excellence with back to back final four appearances, a national championship in 2009, and 25 All-Americans in his 22 years at the helm speaks volumes for Coach Ashworth as well as the commitment from the caliber of players he has recruited. Most importantly, I look forward to building meaningful connections with our Duke student-athletes."
Dasso was one of the most decorated women's tennis players in Notre Dame history and was the Fighting Irish's first four-time All-American. She was named the ITA National Senior Player of the year in 2001 and still holds almost every Notre Dame record, including career singles victories (140), season singles victories (40) and combined wins in one season (74). Dasso was the 2001 recipient of the Francis Patrick O'Conner Award, presented annually by the University to student-athletes who best display the total embodiment of the true spirit of Notre Dame.
Dasso served as head coach at the University of Illinois from 2006-2015, where her teams posted a record of 122-98, including a 56-38 mark in Big Ten Conference play during that span. Dasso guided the Illini to four NCAA tournament appearances and her 2012 team earned a national ranking of No. 21.
A native of Long Grove, Illinois, Dasso helped Notre Dame to a 54-24 (.692) record during her first stint as an assistant (2003-06) in South Bend. She was named the 2006 ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year after helping the Irish to a 27-2 record and an all-time high ranking of No. 2 in the country for eight weeks before falling in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship. In the fall of 2005, she handled the on-court coaching as twins Catrina Thompson and Christian Thompson won the doubles crown in the ITA All-American Championships, marking Notre Dame's first grand-slam title. The Thompsons became ND's first-ever national No. 1-ranked team in the spring of 2005.
She spent the 2015-16 season as a volunteer assistant at Duke for head coach
Jamie Ashworth and the 2016-17 campaign as an assistant coach under Claire Pollard at Northwestern before returning to her alma mater in the summer of 2017 to work under head coach Jay Louderback.
Most recently, Dasso was the head coach at Campbell during the 2018-19 season and helped guide the Camels to the semifinals of the Big South tournament.
