Blue Devils Complete Second Day of Action in Cary
CARY, N.C. – Following an impressive opening day at the Duke James Bonk Invitational, the Blue Devils continued their success at the tournament Saturday in both singles and doubles action.
Duke cruised to an 8-0 start in singles Saturday morning and kept the momentum rolling in the afternoon, with four Blue Devils earning spots in finals matches. Junior Edu Güell, who put together a 3-0 day between singles and doubles, won twice to set up a finals meeting with teammate Garrett Johns Sunday morning. Also going 3-0 on the day were junior Sean Sculley and freshman Andrew Zhang, both of whom will have the chance to play for singles titles Sunday, and rookie Samuel Rubell, who won twice in singles consolation play. Another Blue Devil freshman, Omni Kumar, also played his way into a singles consolation final with a pair of three-set victories.
In doubles, the duo of Güell and freshman Michael Heller topped Gardner-Webb's Breno Plentz and Ross Gilbert, 6-4, to wrap up the weekend 3-0. Freshmen Johns and Kumar advanced to the final in their draw before falling, while the tandems of Sculley and senior Nick Stachowiak and Rubell and Zhang both posted wins in consolation finals matches.
The finals singles matches of the tournament are set to begin at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Cary Tennis Park.
