CLEMSON, S.C.—Duke junior goalkeeper
Will Pulisic turned in yet another outstanding performance with a career-high 10 saves as the 15th-ranked Blue Devils fell on the road to No. 7 Clemson, 3-1, in ACC men's soccer action. Pulisic has 18 saves in the past two games and an ACC-leading 30 on the year.
Pulisic's 10 saves are the most by a Duke goalkeeper since Alex Long had 10 against Virginia, Oct. 8, 2013. It bests his previous career high by two.
Daniele Proch registered Duke's goal, his sixth of the season.
Clemson (7-0-0, 2-0-0) had a good portion of the run of play in the opening 20 minutes, firing four shots on goal only to be denied by spectacular saves from Pulisic.
After a simple save in the early going, Pulisic broke out a few spectacular stops as he tipped a header from Oskar Agren just over the bar. Minutes later, the junior keeper dove to his right and knocked down a Kimarni Smith strike headed straight for the left upper 90.
Clemson finally found a way to beat Pulisic in the 25th minute when James Brighton headed home a Justin Malou cross at the back post just under the cross bar and inside the left post for the 1-0 lead.
The Blue Devils started to get into the game a bit more as the half progressed, but the pass into the final third was off as the Tigers were able to keep Duke (4-3-0, 0-2-0) from any dangerous opportunities.
Pulisic finished with six first-half saves, one shy of his career high in a half.
The second half featured a lot of end-to-end action as Duke looked for the equalizer and Clemson aimed to get a crucial second tally.
Proch put Duke's first shot on frame in the 56th minute, but it was the Tigers coming back 50 seconds later to take the 2-0 lead. Grayson Barber finished the shot from eight yards out after Adrian Nunez smartly poked the ball back after the ball bounced around in the box leaving the Duke defense vulnerable to leaving the open man.
Pulisic was excellent again in the second half, adding four more saves and forcing Clemson attackers into tough angles.
Proch brought the Blue Devils within one in the 86th minute, finishing a near-post pass from
Stephen O'Connell. However, Clemson answered 16 seconds later on the ensuing kickoff as Smith passed the ball past Pulisic to dash Duke's hopes of tying the game.
Duke continues its challenging ACC schedule Friday, Sept. 27 at No. 11 North Carolina. The game is slated to kick off at 6 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
