LAKE ELMO, Minn. – Duke University sophomore
Gina Kim carded a two-under-par, 70, in the second round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate Tuesday as she moved into a share of 13th place at the 6,410-yard, par 72 Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo, Minn.
A native of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kim opened her day by draining a 15-foot birdie on No. 11, her second hole of the morning and then stuck her approach on the short par four 15th to within two feet and moved to two-under-par with the birdie. After a bogey on No. 16, Kim hit her approach on the 451-yard, par five 18th from 132 yards using her 9-iron to a foot and registered her first collegiate eagle.
Kim moved to the next nine sitting at three-under-par and stuck another approach to two feet for birdie and improved to four-under-par. She stayed there until the winds picked up and suffered a bogey on No. 5 and double-bogey on No. 6. Kim responded with a nine-foot birdie on the 167-yard, par three seventh and then parred the final two holes to finish at two-under, 70. She hit 12 greens, 12 fairways and had 28 putts in the second round.
"I think I played some pretty solid golf," commented Kim. "I definitely made some great course management decisions that helped me stick some close shots to the hole. I also made an eagle, which is a testament to how much I have learned about the golf course, where I should put it. It kind of stinks to make some mistakes towards the end of the front nine but with another round to go I will have plenty of opportunities tomorrow."
Wake Forest's Rachel Kuehn continues to lead the individual action with a 10-under-par, 134.
As a team, Duke was able to move up the leaderboard during the round as the Blue Devils got to six-under-par midway through the day. Duke closed the back nine at eight-over-par to fall into eighth overall heading into Wednesday's final round.
"I see good effort being made out there and great attitudes," said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. "We're just not getting the scores. It's not far off and the season is young."
Wake Forest holds the 36-hole team lead at 12-under, 564, while Southern California (570), Arkansas (572), Texas (573), Arizona State (574), Arizona (574), South Carolina (579), Duke (581), UCLA (588), Alabama (589), Virginia (602) and Minnesota (619) rounded out the field.
For the second straight day, senior
Ana Belac carded an even-par, 72, and she will head to Wednesday in a tie for 19th with a two-day ledger of 144. After a bogey on hole No. 1, she parred four consecutive holes. On the 296-yard, par four 15th, she hit her lob wedge from 55 yards to two feet and sank her first birdie of the day. Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, added a second birdie on No. 18 as she stuck a bunker shot to within inches.
On the final nine holes, she remained one-under until back-to-back bogeys on No. 5 and No. 6. For the second straight day, Belac birdied the par five ninth to close the day at even par, 72. She hit a team-best 16 greens, 13 fairways and rolled 33 putts.
With her second even par round, Belac now owns 43 career rounds of even or under par to move into a tie for eighth on Duke's all-time record charts along with recent graduate
Virginia Elena Carta.
Coming off turning in a 76 in round one, junior
Jaravee Boonchant signed for an even-par, 72, Tuesday. She notched a birdie, bogey and seven pars on both nines, while hitting 14 fairways, 13 greens and collecting 32 putts. Boonchant, a product of Bangkok, Thailand, collected her first birdie of the day on No. 15 as she hit her 54-degree wedge from 62 yards to two feet and drained the putt. Her putter came through strong on the way in as she got up and down for par on No. 7 and No. 8, which included a 21-foot and 10-foot putts, respectively. Boonchant two-putted for birdie on No. 9 to close with a 72.
Freshman
Erica Shepherd turned in a four-over, 76, Tuesday and will enter the final round in a tie for 30th with a 148. Shepherd, who is from Greenwood, Ind., was solid in her round, but couldn't get many putts to drop finishing with 33 on the day. She was four-over-par during her first eight holes, before registering her first collegiate eagle. Shepherd hit her 8-iron from 153 yards and eight yards of slope to 14 feet from the cup, before sinking the eagle putt. She finished the day with seven pars and bogeys on No. 1 and No. 6. Shepherd hit 10 fairways and 11 greens for her round.
Duke will open the final round off hole No. 10 beginning at 9:35 a.m., along with South Carolina and UCLA. Fans can follow the action via live scoring at www.GolfStat.com and Duke social media accounts on Twitter (@DukeWGolf) and Instagram (@DukeWGolf).
