LAKE ELMO, Minn. – In the season opener against one of the top fields nationally, Duke University sophomore
Gina Kim carded a one-under-par, 215, on her way to placing tied for 11
th at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate, which was played at the 6,410-yard, par 72 Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo, Minn.
Kim, a product of Chapel Hill, N.C., turned in rounds of 73, 70 and 72 for a one-under-par, 215, over the last three days. It marked her fifth career top 10 finish out of 11 tournaments.
On the front nine (holes No. 10-18), Kim opened with a bogey, after missing the fairway with her tee shot. She responded by closing the final eight holes with birdies on No. 13, No. 16 and No. 18 to make the turn at one-under-par. Kim would battle the wind on the way in with eight pars and a bogey on the 170-yard, par three fourth. She hit 14 greens, 10 fairways and rolled 33 putts on the day.
After going low with a 10-under-par ledger a year ago in the event, senior
Ana Belac turned in a tied for 26
th finish with rounds of 72, 72 and 76 for a four-over, 220. Belac, who hails from Portoroz, Slovenia, notched a tied for team best with four birdies on the day. She collected her first on the 160-yard, par three 12
th and then after hitting her approach into the bunker on the par five 18
th, she stuck her third shot to within a couple of feet for birdie. Belac closed with birdies on No. 2 and No. 9 to finish with a 76. She hit 11 fairways, 11 greens and had 33 putts.
"I definitely think I left some opportunities out there on the course, but considering the tough conditions later on in the tournament I am still pretty proud of keeping everything together and making smart decisions out there on the course," added Kim. "It was a good experience for me and I am looking forward to the next tournament.
As a team, the Blue Devils posted rounds of 292, 289 and 302 to finish ninth with a 54-hole ledger of 883. Wake Forest went wire-to-wire winning with a 17-under, 847. Arkansas (861), Texas (862), Arizona State (865), Southern California (866), Arizona (868), South Carolina (880), Alabama (881), Duke (883), UCLA (891), Virginia (905) and Minnesota (938) rounded out the field.
"I think this was a really good challenge for our team to get back into the tournament mode," commented Kim. "We didn't do as well as we had hoped to, but I think this is a great learning experience for all of us to take in and figure out what we should do for our next tournament."
Wake Forest freshman Rachel Kuehn collected rounds of 67, 67 and 69 for a 13-under, 203, to win the individual title. Duke's Kim was one of only 13 golfers finishing under par over the three days.
"Clearly not the finish we were looking for," said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. "Hats off to Wake for their fantastic tournament. We will continue to work hard and the scores will come. The season is young."
