Last Time Out
It was an offensive affair at Koskinen Stadium a week ago as the Blue Devils used five first-half goals to power to a 6-0 victory over LSU Sunday afternoon to conclude the 2019 Duke Nike Classic.
Five different Blue Devils tallied goals, while nine recorded at least one point in Duke's largest victory since a 7-0 blanking of Oklahoma State on Nov. 17, 2017 in the NCAA Round of 16. The offensive effort was highlighted by senior
Ella Stevens, who tied her career-high in both points and goals, with two goals and one assist as she netted the brace.
Duke vs. James Madison
Sunday's matchup between Duke and James Madison marks the second time in program history that the two teams have met. The Blue Devils own the series advantage over the Dukes, 1-0. Most recently, the two teams met in the 2015 season, as Duke defeated JMU, 5-0, in a matchup inside Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils own a record of 17-6-1 against current members of the CAA conference.
Blue Devils Sweep Duke Nike Classic
The Blue Devils notched a perfect 2-0 record across the 2019 Duke Nike Classic last weekend, defeating both UNLV and LSU. Duke scored a tournament-high tying nine goals across the two matchups, tying crosstown-rival North Carolina for the most goals scored. The Blue Devils opened the weekend with a 3-0 victory over the Rebels before downing the Tigers, 6-0, to close out the week. The trio of
Ella Stevens,
Mackenzie Pluck and
Marykate McGuire led the offensive effort, each scoring two goals apiece.
Pluck Receives Weekly Honor
Sophomore
Mackenzie Pluck was named to the
TopDrawerSoccer's Team of the Week this past Tuesday, being selected as an honorable mention. The second-year Blue Devil scored five points across last week's matchups, tallying two goals and one assist. Pluck notched her first career multi-goal performance in the matchup against UNLV with a pair of first-half scores. Overall, Pluck has scored three times this season, and ranks third on the team in points with eight. She is tied for the team lead in shots with 17, which ties her for 10th in the conference.
Offense Catching Rhythm
After going scoreless in back-to-back matchups, the Blue Devil offense has caught its rhythm recently. Duke has scored at least three goals in each of its last three matchups, highlighted by a six-goal performance in the most recent match against LSU. The Blue Devils are averaging four 4.0 goals per game across the last three games, and have outscored their opponents 12-2 over the span. The span marks the first time Duke has scored three or more goals in a game since the 2017 season when the Blue Devils scored a total of 14 goals from Nov. 17-24 in the NCAA Tournament.
Duke in the Polls
Duke checked in at No. 11 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll this week as one of four ACC teams eight schools ranked in the top 25. Additionally, the Blue Devils are ranked 15th in the Soccer America Top 25, and 16th in the
TopDrawerSoccer rankings.
