DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke pitcher Mitch Stallings earned 2019 All-Star distinction, while being selected as the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Year, announced by the league Friday afternoon.
Stallings, a former member of the Danville Braves—the Rookie Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, was recently called up to the Rome Braves—the Class A affiliate of the Braves organization on Aug. 15 after a stellar season in Danville. He was tabbed the league's All-Star left-handed pitcher after posting a 3-5 record in 11 games, including nine starts. His ERA of 2.25 is still the best in the Appalachian League, and his 69 strikeouts currently lead the league.
Stallings ranks second in both innings pitched (56.0) and WHIP (1.14), while placing third in opponent batting average (.243) among qualified pitchers. He set a career high in strikeouts with an 11-strikeout game on June 26 at Bluefield and matched that on Aug. 2 against Princeton. Those marked the most strikeouts a Danville pitcher has had since Ronan Pacheco struck out 13 on July 28, 2010. Stallings was named the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 24-30.
A four-year standout with the Blue Devils, Stallings closed out his career in Durham as the 15th pitcher in program history to total 200-plus career strikeouts, and the ninth Blue Devil pitcher to make 80 or more career appearances. The southpaw struck out 100 batters in 94.0 innings of his work during his final season, becoming just the first Blue Devil pitcher to reach 100 strikeouts in a season since Marcus Stroman, while leading Duke to its first-ever NCAA Super Regional Appearance.
