PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Playing in his first professional event, Chandler Eaton made his first cut as the Duke men's golf rising senior will play the weekend at the 2019 United States Open at Pebble Beach.
Eaton carded a one-under 70 on Friday, following up his stellar opening round 72, and the Blue Devil is even par through 36 holes. He is tied for 32nd overall in the 156-player field, and tied for second among the 16 amateurs.
The top 60 players and ties made the cut at the major, which was 2-over par. Eaton is one of four amateurs to play the weekend, joining Stanford's Brandon Wu (-2), Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland (even) and 17-year old Michael Thorbjornsen (+2).
Eaton began Friday's round on the 10th hole and went out in an even-par 36 with birdies on the par-4 13th and 16th holes. His then birdied the first, gave one back on the second and birdied the short par-3 seventh to get back to even par for the championship.
Playing solid golf tee to green, Eaton hit 13 of 14 fairways on Friday. He has hit 71 percent of fairways overall and is ranked top-30 in field in putting through 36 holes.
Other players at even par heading to the weekend include Tiger Woods, Webb Simpson, Danny Willett.
