ORLANDO, Fla. – Sophomore Kelly Chen advanced to the NCAA Singles Round of 32 with her victory Monday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Chen, ranked No. 21 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), opened the contest against Pepperdine's Jessica Failla in the Round of 64. Chen defeated No. 53 Failla (6-2, 6-4) to advance to the second round slated for Tuesday.
Meible Chi and Maria Mateas competed in the Round of 64 as well but were unable to advance.
No. 33 Chi fell to No. 45 Jada Hart of UCLA (6-1, 6-1) while Illinois' No. 43 Asuka Kawai defeated No. 11 Mateas (3-6, 6-2, 6-3).
Chen will face 10th-ranked Anna Rogers of NC State in the second round Tuesday.
Senior doubles team No. 18 Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy will kick off the dubs portion of the championship and will face top-ranked Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes of South Carolina.
