DURHAM, N.C. – The draws for the 2019 Women's Tennis NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships were released Sunday with three Blue Devils set for singles play and one doubles team. Matches will kick off Monday, May 20 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Kelly Chen, Meible Chi and Maria Mateas all received at-large bids to compete in the 64-player singles field. Chi will be making her third straight appearance in the singles championship as a junior while sophomore Chen returns for the second time.
Chen is set to take on Pepperdine's Jessica Failla in the first round Monday at 12:30 p.m. Chi is matched against Jada Hart of UCLA for a 2:30 p.m., first serve Monday while Mateas will take on Asuka Kawai of Illinois at 11:30 a.m.
In the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, Failla checked in at No. 53, Hart is No. 45 and Kawai is No. 43.
The trio of Blue Devils are all ranked in the top 35 with Mateas No. 11, Chen No. 21 and Chi No. 33.
Chen faced Failla in the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor National Championship in February and secured a 6-2, 6-4 court three victory. Mateas will also face a familiar opponent as she defeated Kawai 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (8) in a home match versus Illinois in February.
Chen enters this week with a 22-4 overall ledger and is riding an eight-match win streak. Chi is 15-3 this spring while Mateas is 12-11.
Along with those participating in the singles tournament, senior duo Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy will team up for doubles and will face top-ranked Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes of Southern California in the first round on Tuesday.
Hamlin and McCarthy were doubles partners early in the season before switching teams around. During that time, the two produced a 10-3 overall record. The two own the highest ITA ranking of any Duke doubles team, No. 18.
