No. 9 Duke Holds Strong in Third at Clemson Invitational

SALEM, S.C. – Paced by four-under rounds of 68 from sophomores Adrien Pendaries and Evan Katz, No. 9 Duke held its third-place position after 36 holes of the Clemson Invitational in Salem, S.C, on Sunday.

The four ranked teams in the field continued to distance themselves from the 15-team pack with 18 holes remaining on Monday at the Cliffs at Keowee Falls. No. 8 Georgia Tech posted a 271 on Sunday and leads the tournament at 33-under par. No. 14 Georgia is six back, with the Blue Devils 10 back, and host No. 17 Clemson 13 off the pace.

Pendaries, a sophomore from France, backed up his first-round 64 with a second-round 68 and sits in solo second place at 12-under 132. Katz jumped 12 spots up the leaderboard thanks to his 68 on Sunday and is tied for ninth at five-under 139.

“It was a solid day tee to green and I was able to give myself a lot of looks for birdie,” said Katz. “Not a ton of putts dropped for me, but I took advantage of the reachable par-fives and was able to make a couple big par putts on 13 and 15 to keep some momentum going.”

Katz birdied three of his first six holes, and finished strong with birdies on the par-five 16^th and 18^th to post his lowest round since a 66 at the Louisville Cardinal Challenge this fall.

With 18 holes remaining on Monday, Pendaries (-12) is one off the lead set by Georgia Tech's Luke Schniederjans (-13). Katz (-5) is eight back.

Senior Alex Smalley posted his second consecutive sub-par round with a two-under 70 on Sunday and is tied for 16^th at three-under 141. Junior Chandler Eaton, after shooting a 72 on Sunday is also tied with Smalley at three-under 141. Junior Steven DiLisio is tied for 34^th at 1-over 145.

Monday's final round is underway at 9 a.m. with the Blue Devils teeing off at 10:40 a.m. and paired with Georgia Tech and Georgia.
