SYRACUSE, N.Y. – It was a pitchers' duel Friday afternoon at the Skytop Softball Stadium until four runs in the fifth and sixth innings propelled the Syracuse Orange (18-20, 7-6 ACC) to a 4-0 series-opening win against the Duke Blue Devils (21-23, 8-8 ACC).
The two sides will now close out the series with a Saturday doubleheader due to inclement weather expected in the area on Sunday. The twin bill will start at 1 p.m. ET, with the series finale slated for 3 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra, which fans can access through WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.
Each side was held hitless throughout the first two innings of play until a single to center from Deja Davis gave Duke life in the top of the third. However, Syracuse, as they did multiple times throughout the game, escaped the jam to keep the Blue Devils off the board.
Peyton St. George continued her dominant play in the circle by holding the Orange without a hit through 4.1 innings. Syracuse went back-to-back with singles in the fifth to bring home its first run and take a 1-0 lead heading into the final two frames. The Orange added three more scores in the sixth behind four hits to break open a 4-0 lead they would hold until the end.
Duke managed just one hit on the day, Davis' second-inning base hit. The Blue Devils put six runners on the bases in total, with four coming via walk and another through a hit by pitch. St. George (7-5) finished the day with 6.0 innings of work, striking out seven and walking four while scattering three hits.
