BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Duke men's tennis team fell to ACC foe Virginia Tech, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Duke fell to 6-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The Hokies improved their overall record to 10-5 and earned their first ACC victory of the season (1-3).
The Blue Devils won their fourth doubles point in seven matches as junior Nick Stachowiak and senior Jason Lapidus earned a 6-1 victory over Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Rebeiro. On court three, juniors Spencer Furman and Robert Levine kept their undefeated season alive as a pair, winning 6-1 over Carlo Donato and Freddy Mesmer. The junior duo is now 4-0 on the season at the number three position. Senior Catalin Mateas and sophomore Sean Sculley were down 4-3 to Jason Kros and Brandon Perez before the point was clinched.
In singles action, Rebeiro tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 court three victory over Mateas. The Hokies gained the lead after Korsgaard prevailed over No. 114 Furman 6-2, 6-2 on court two. In a battle of ranked opponents, No. 66 Kross defeated No. 41 Stachowiak 6-2, 6-3 at number one singles, giving Virginia Tech a 3-1 advantage. The Hokies clinched the match after Evan Fragistas defeated Senior Vincent Lin on court six 6-4, 7-6 (7-6).
Donato defeated Sculley 6-4, 6-0, 6-1 on court six, however, Levine earned his fifth victory of the season with a 6-2, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) win court five. The victory is Levine's fourth in his last five decisions.
Duke next travels to Clemson, S.C., on Friday for a 3:30 p.m. showdown. The Blue Devils end their three-match road trip at Georgia Tech on Sunday at 12 noon.
