WAILUA, Hawai'i – Sophomore Evan Katz fired a final-round 68 and No. 2 Duke posted a third-place finish at the John Burns Intercollegiate that concluded Saturday at the Wailua Golf Club in Wailua, Hawai'i.
The Blue Devils shot 285 as a team in Saturday's final round, as Katz's 68 was followed by a pair of even-par 72's from senior Alex Smalley and junior Steven DiLisio. Smalley finished the tournament with a six-under par 210 and led Duke with a ninth-place finish.
No. 11 Arizona State held on to its 36-hole lead and finished off the victory with a three-stroke win over No. 20 Texas A&M. The Sun Devils shot 840 (-24) as a team, followed by the Aggies (843, -21), Blue Devils (845, -19), North Carolina (846, -18) and UNLV (851, -13) in the top five of the 20-team field.
Both Smalley and DiLisio played each of their three rounds at or below par. DiLisio posted an even-par 72 on Saturday and finished the tournament in a tie for 12th at five-under par (211). Junior Chandler Eaton signed for a 77 on Saturday and placed tied for 35th at one-under 215.
Katz was the low-man for the Blue Devils on Saturday, highlighting his four-under 68 with a pair of eagles on the par-five first and 10th holes. He was two-over 218 for the tournament and finished in a tie for 48th, along with teammate Adrien Pendaries, who shot 73 on Saturday.
Playing as an individual, senior Shrish Dwivedi placed in a tied for 57th (220).
The Blue Devils are back in action March 17-19 at the Valspar Collegiate in Palm City, Fla.
