DURHAM, N.C. – A record night from Deja Davis and a standout showing in the circle from Peyton St. George fueled a dominating 8-0 run-rule victory for the Duke Blue Devils (5-5) against the North Carolina Central Eagles (1-6) Tuesday night at the Duke Softball Stadium.
Davis turned in the second 4-for-4 showing in program history while scoring two runs, driving in another and tallying a double. She also continued her excellence on the base paths, going 3-for-3 in stolen bases for the second-straight contest to improve to 10-for-10 on the season.
In the circle, St. George (1-0) threw a two-hit complete game shutout in Duke inaugural meeting against the Eagles. The righty registered seven strikeouts, the third seven-plus strikeout performance of her career.
Duke tallied the game's first run in its first time up at the plate, as a bunt single and steal from Davis set up an RBI double down the right field line from Rachel Abboud to make it 1-0 after one. The Blue Devils would tack on a second run next time up thanks to a passed ball that allowed Marissa Gagliano to score from third. Gagliano dropped a bunt single and stole her way to third before making 2-0 in favor of the home team.
Caroline Jacobsen would get in on the action in the third, singling through the right side to score Davis and make it 3-0 Duke. NC Central was able to hold the Blue Devils in check over the next two innings until they posted five runs in the sixth to earn the walk-off win. Jacobsen singled to lead things off and was brought home by a Kyla Morris double, giving the freshman the first RBI of her career. Gagliano added the second run the next at-bat, driving home Morris on a single through the right side. Three batters later, Jazmine Moreno reeled off the first triple of her career to score two more runs and make it 7-0.
The final blow came with two outs on the board, as none other than Davis stepped to the plate and doubled to right field to score Moreno and send the Blue Devils to their third run-rule win in program history.
Along with Davis' four-hit game, two other Blue Devils finished with multi-hit showings, as Jacobsen and Gagliano both went 2-for-3. Abboud, Morris and Moreno rounded out Duke's offensive showing, which turned in 10-plus hits for the 11th time in program history. As a team, the Blue Devils finished with six stolen bases, which is the single-game record for Duke softball.
Duke hits the road for its second road trip of 2019, as the Blue Devils head to Palm Springs, Calif., for the 2019 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Duke opens the weekend with a doubleheader against Northwestern (1 p.m. ET) and Cal (3:30 p.m.) on Friday, Feb. 22. They take on Army at 6 p.m., and Ohio State at 8:30 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 23 before closing out the weekend against Utah on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 12 p.m.
