Robertson Scores in Overtime to Send Duke to Championship Weekend
Joe Robertson scored with the shot clock ticking down to one in overtime to lift the Blue Devils to a thrilling 14-13 victory over Notre Dame in the NCAA quarterfinals at Hofstra University. Duke advanced to its 12th NCAA semifinal in program history and second straight.
"That was one of the most fun games I've ever played in," said senior
Cade Van Raaphorst. "I just had a smile on my face the entire game."
Joe Stein, having taken 20 faceoffs on the day, came out and popped the ball out to the left wing where Van Raaphorst picked up the ground ball. Head coach
John Danowski called a timeout to draw up what hopefully would be the final play of the game.
Duke dropped the ball a couple of times and nearly lost it over the head of
Joey Manown before the junior attackman picked up the loose ball. Duke fired three more shots before getting one final look with six seconds left. With time winding down to under five on the shot clock, Robertson got the ball in his stick behind the goal, turned the corner of the cage and got an opening and fired a left-handed bouncer past the Notre Dame goalie for the win with one second left on the shot clock.
Manown Scores Last-Second Goal to Beat No. 5 Denver
Junior
Joey Manown scooped up a loose ball with eight seconds left and threw it in the goal to give the eighth-ranked Blue Devils a thrilling 10-9 comeback win over No. 5 Denver.
Duke, trailing 7-4 in the fourth quarter, outscored the Pioneers 6-2 in the final 12:37 to capture the upset victory at home. The Blue Devils built a 9-7 lead with 2:51 left, only to have the two-goal edge erased with only 19 seconds remaining.
"I'm not really sure [what flipped the switch on offense]," said head coach
John Danowski. "I think probably a little bit of it was facing off and we got a few more possessions. We scored a little bit in transition. We opened up the field a little bit and we probably capitalized on a couple of their mistakes as well. The game got ragged and we were able to take advantage of that."
After the Pioneers tied the game, 9-9 with 19 ticks on the clock,
Brian Smyth went out to the faceoff X and scrapped his way to the victory. Senior defenseman
Cade Van Raaphorst picked up the ground ball on the draw and found
Brad Smith, whose pass towards the middle of the field was just off the mark.
The ball bounced in Duke's favor this time as Manown, all alone on the right side, picked up the ball and fired it in with six seconds remaining. Van Raaphorst came up big again in the final faceoff with another ground ball to secure the top-five victory.

Duke Edges Richmond 12-11 to Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals
Nakeie Montgomery and
Brad Smith combined for 10 points to lead the second-seeded Blue Devils to a 12-11 victory over Richmond in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament. The Spiders pulled within one in the last 30 seconds before Duke ran out the clock for the win.
Montgomery finished the day with three goals and two assists, while Smith added two goals and three assists.
"It wasn't pretty, but you just have to win by one and you're playing in another game," said Smith, a team captain. "We have another week with the boys and that was the goal. Maybe it wasn't as clean or as fundamental as we would have liked, but a win is a win. We're one of eight teams left playing and that's something to be proud of and be excited for."

JT Giles-Harris was selected as the 2019 ACC Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year in a vote of the league's five head coaches last season. Giles-Harris is the third Blue Devil to garner the honor in program history.
An All-ACC pick for the first time in his career in 2019, Giles-Harris joins the likes of
CJ Costabile and
Brendan Fowler as ACC Defensive Players of the Year. He is the first Duke close defenseman to pick up the award since it was started in 2012.

Second-ranked Duke outscored Towson 4-2 and forced eight turnovers in the fourth quarter to come away with a crucial 12-10 victory over the No. 5 Tigers in Saturday afternoon men's lacrosse action. It was Duke's third top-five win of the season.
