North Carolina Outlasts Duke in Four Thursday
DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team dropped a hard-fought battle to Tobacco Road rival North Carolina, 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 18-25, 20-25) Thursday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the setback, the Blue Devils drop to 10-15 (4-9 ACC) while the Tar Heels improve to 12-11 (9-4 ACC).
"We're disappointed because we wanted to come out on top," head coach Jolene Nagel said. "Our team is working hard and getting better all the time. We have to stay together as a team and keep working hard every day. We have five matches left and if we keep getting better, that will be very wonderful."
Duke was led by senior Samantha Amos with 13 kills while rookie Gracie Johnson added 10. Defensively, junior Payton Schwantz and libero Mackenzie Cole racked up 20 and 19 digs, respectively, while freshman Lizzie Fleming and Lily Cooper added six blocks each to win the battle at the net 22-12 over the Tar Heels.
Duke came out strong in the first set to take it 25-22 and were led by Ade Owokoniran and Amos with five kills each. The Blue Devils led as many as six to force a North Carolina timeout. Duke led 21-20 before back-to-back kills from Amos and Fleming to ultimately help them win the set.
Both squads hit very efficiently in the second set with Duke at .277 percent and North Carolina at .245 percent. North Carolina's Lauren Harrison tallied her 12th kill of the math to help push them past Duke to take the second.
The Blue Devils were unable to find their rhythm in the third frame as they hit just .037 percent to North Carolina's .235 percent. In the fourth and what would become the final set, the Tar Heels hit .265 with 13 kills and just four errors to take the match.
The Tar Heels were led by Harrison with 19 kills.
Duke will take on NC State Sunday at 1 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
