DURHAM, N.C. – The Atlanta Tipoff Club released the student-athletes on the 2019-20 Women's Citizen Naismith Trophy Watch List Wednesday with Duke University women's basketball graduate
Haley Gorecki among the 50 selected.
In the season opener, Gorecki showcased her solid all-around game notching 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists, one blocked shot and one steal in nearly 30 minutes of play. Duke secured a 93-57 victory over High Point in Cameron Indoor Stadium Tuesday evening.
The midseason top 30 will be announced in early February and then the competition will be narrowed down to 10 national semifinalists on March 3, 2020. Following those results, four finalists will be named on March 20, 2020, and the winner of the 2020 Citizen Naismith Trophy for Women's Player of the Year will be announced on April 4, 2020.
A product of Palatine, Ill., Gorecki is coming off a season where she averaged 17.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.6 steals, while earning All-ACC First Team accolades. She is the highest returning scoring in the ACC and 12th among power five conferences. Gorecki became the third Blue Devil to register 500 points, 200 rebounds, 100 assists and 75 steals in a season a year ago.
"The competition for the 2020 Women's Citizen Naismith Trophy will heat up as more players enter the competition throughout the season, but these 50 candidates are the early contenders to watch," said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. "We are excited to watch these women play and compete as we have another great year of college basketball ahead."
A 2019-20 Meyers Drysdale Top Shooting Guard honoree, Gorecki was the only player in the ACC and one of three among power five conferences a year ago to rank in the top 17 in points, rebounds, steals and assists. Gorecki needs only 170 points to reach 1,000 for her career and has drained 102 three-pointers in 53 games the last two seasons. The 6-0 standout ranked tied for fourth in the ACC last season with 11 games with 20 or more points.
Duke will next travel to College Station, Texas to face sixth-ranked Texas A&M Sunday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m., live on SEC Network+.
