DURHAM, N.C. – Duke softball head coach
Marissa Young sat in front of the camera to discuss the current state of the 2019-20 season after a successful fall campaign and looked ahead at the season to come.
"This fall has been challenging and exciting to see how much the team has progressed," Young said. "We did a lot more games on the road this year than we've done in the past. We wanted to give the freshmen a chance to experience what it's like to travel and handle that experience on the road during this fall."
The Blue Devils finished the 2019 fall exhibition season holding a 6-2 record. Duke notched wins over East Carolina, UNC Wilmington, NC Central, Charlotte, Campbell and Winthrop. The two losses over the fall were both tight games against Tennessee and UNC Greensboro. Duke led both games in the eighth inning but ultimately dropped both contests in the 10th and ninth innings, respectively.
Team Three enjoyed an abundance of success at the plate, putting 73 runs on the board through 69 innings of fall play. Duke held a positive run margin of +38.
"Year one, pitching was our highlight," Young said. "Year two, defense was our highlight. This year, we have seen an offensive surge and that has really been great."
Young was complimentary of her team and the new staff that was assembled in the offseason for their hard work during the offseason.
"Team three is a really unique experience," Young said of the current team. "I think this is finally, a group where we have more upperclassmen than we have younger and they've been great instrumental in the leadership standpoint as well as they've been instrumental in teaching our new coaching staff. So it's been a really nice blend of the players teaching coaches what we've done up to this point. That's been successful.
Duke enjoys a couple months' hiatus to hone in on the things that were seen in fall ball that could be improved before the coming season in the spring of 2020.
"These next couple months are going to go by really fast for us between fall ball and the spring," Young commented. "Being challenged with some good teams this fall, the kids were exposed in some ways. That is going to shape purposeful work for the next couple of months. They're determined to go home and work hard over the break and come back ready to get after it and have our best season."
