DURHAM, N.C. – Duke outscored Miami 14-0 in the fourth quarter to register a 27-17 rain-soaked victory on senior day at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium on Saturday.
The win snapped a five-game skid for Duke, who finish out the year at 5-7 overall and 3-5 in ACC play.
Duke's defense was stellar on Saturday as it sacked the Miami quarterback nine times throughout the contest for a loss of 50 yards, both season highs. Redshirt freshman Chris Rumph II tallied an impressive 3.5 sacks on the day to finish with the second most all-time in a single game in program history.
After being held scoreless in the third quarter and trailing 17-13 heading into the final frame, the Blue Devils posted 14 points in the fourth quarter and held Miami scoreless to steal the game. This marked Duke's first come-from-behind victory since Nov. 25, 2017 at Wake Forest in which the Blue Devils trailed 23-17 after three before coming back to win 31-23. Â
Junior running backDeon Jackson jump-started Duke's 14-point fourth quarter when he scampered in from two-yards out for a score. After forcing a 3-and-out during Miami's next drive, redshirt senior quarterback Quentin Harris tossed a 49-yard strike to rookie wide receiver Jalon Calhoun to cap a four-play, 70 yard scoring drive that ultimately put the game out of reach.
Harris finished 10-of-24 for 156 yards and a touchdown. He also added 49 yards on the ground with a score.
The game opened as a defensive battle as five of the first six drives resulted in a punt with the only outlier being a missed 46-yard field goal by Duke. Ironically, the next five-of-six drives ended in points for both teams to make it a 14-13 ballgame at the break.
Duke got on the board first as redshirt junior AJ Reed knocked a 40-yard field goal through the uprights. The Prattville, Ala., native finished 2-for-3 on the day after also converting from 36 yards.
Calhoun finished as the Blue Devils' top receiver with 82 yards thanks to three receptions. Aaron Young, Darrell Harding Jr. and Noah Gray followed close behind with two receptions each for 35, 23 and 11 yards, respectively. On the ground, Mataeo Durant led Duke with 49 yards on seven carries.
Defensively, Dylan Singleton and Shaka Heyward led Duke with 10 tackles apiece. Rumph II added a career-high eight tackles, including those 3.5 sacks for a loss of 20 yards, and one forced fumble. Koby Quansah led the team with three quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery, while Michael Carter II tallied three pass breakups. Trevon McSwain chipped in with a career-best two forced fumbles.
Redshirt senior punter Austin Parker had another excellent night switching the field of play for the Blue Devils. The Mount Pleasant, N.C., native finished with 401 yards on eight punts, including a 71-yard boot in the third quarter that rolled to a stop on the Miami two-yard line. He finished with four punts of over 50 yards.
Prior to kickoff, Duke honored 22 student-athletes who played in their final game in the Duke Blue and White.
