DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's basketball team closed exhibition action Sunday as the Blue Devils downed 16th-ranked Alaska Anchorage, 91-59, in historic Cameron Indoor Stadium. Leading the charge for Duke was senior Leaonna Odom and graduate Haley Gorecki with 19 points each, while five different Blue Devils scored double-digits.
The Blue Devils used a 14-5 run late in the first quarter and led 23-13 at the break. Odom scored nine of Duke's first 23 points as she hit 4-of-5 field goals. The Blue Devils hit 58.8 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes.
Duke would outscore Alaska Anchorage, 28-21, in the second quarter to hold a 51-34 advantage at the half. Odom led the Blue Devils with 13 points on 6-of-8 field goals, while Gorecki stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. She collected nine points and seven rebounds in the second quarter.
The Blue Devils hit 54.1 percent from the field in the first stanza, while draining 6-of-10 from long range.
Duke would go on a 13-0 run in the third quarter to extend its lead to 66-38 as sophomore Onome Akinbode-James scored seven of those 13 points.
At the end of the third period, Duke led 73-47 and then outscored the Seawolves, 18-12, in the fourth period.
Gorecki, an All-America candidate from Palatine, Ill., finished the game with 19 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and two steals. She hit 4-of-7 from downtown. Akinbode-James added 14 points and five rebounds.
Duke freshmen Jada Claude and Azana Baines each came off the bench to notch double-digits. Claude registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds as she hit 5-of-8 field goals, while Baines collected 10 points and six rebounds.
The Blue Devils finished the game hitting 50.7 from the field and 42.9 percent form three-point land. Duke outscored Alaska Anchorage, 42-10, in the paint and held a 25-12 advantage in second chance points.
Duke will open the 2019-20 regular season Tuesday, Nov. 5 as the Blue Devils host High Point at 7 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
