Four Blue Devils Advance to Quarterfinals of Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Duke men's tennis team won seven of their eight singles matches on Friday at the Lakewood Ranch Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic at the Lakewood Ranch Tennis Center.
Junior Edu Güell and freshmen Garrett Johns and Samuel Rubell advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament in the singles draw as freshman Michael Heller continues his weekend in the quarterfinals of the consolation draw.
Güell breezed through the first round of singles 6-0, 6-2 over 25th-seed Conor Somers of Notre Dame. He followed his first win with another over Rithvik Bollipalli [24] of South Florida 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (5).
Johns passed through the first two rounds of the singles draw with a 6-0, 6-2 win versus 27th-seed Brian Berdusco of Florida in the first round and a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 victory over Notre Dame's William Howells [22].
Two straight set victories sent Rubell into the quarterfinals. The Miami Beach, Fla., native topped the U.S. Naval Academy's Jack Dabek [26] 6-4, 6-3 before taking down 10th-seed Vuk Budic of Illinois 7-5, 6-3.
After dropping his first match to 12th-seed Nick Beaty (Michigan), Heller entered the consolation draw for the tournament. The Boca Raton, Fla., native was dubbed the 12th-seed in the consolation draw and topped fifth-seed Johnathan Small of Notre Dame 6-2, 6-1.
Both of Duke's doubles teams fell in their first matches of the day.
Duke continues play tomorrow with the singles quarterfinals and semifinals. The Blue Devils will take the court at approximately 11:30 p.m. for the quarterfinals and the semifinals will begin play at 3 p.m.
