DURHAM, N.C.—Virginia Tech scored in the 63rd minute and defended furiously in the final 20 to earn a 2-1 victory over Duke on Senior Night in the ACC men's soccer regular season finale at Koskinen Stadium.
Daniele Proch netted the lone goal for the Blue Devils, while Daniel Pereira had a goal and an assist for the 22nd-ranked Hokies.
The Blue Devils honored their nine outstanding seniors prior to the game. The group compiled a 38-27-9 record in four years and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and 2018. Duke drops to 7-8-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the ACC and puts it as the No. 12 seed in the upcoming ACC Championship. The Blue Devils will play No. 5 seed NC State, Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.
"[These seniors] were here when we were struggling a little bit when they were freshmen and we turned it around and got back on the right direction," said head coach
John Kerr. "I owe a lot to them. They were very instrumental in getting us back on track and I'd like them to finish in the right way and so far it hasn't been that way."
Virginia Tech (8-5-2, 3-4-2) had the better of play in the first half, beating the Blue Devils to the first and second balls. The Hokies, after a couple of close chances Duke didn't finish in front of net, grabbed the 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute with a shot from Pereira from just inside the box. His driven shot deflected off a defender and skipped into the left corner past the grasp of Duke goalkeeper
Will Pulisic.
"We were second best again in the first half in all facets of the game," said head coach
John Kerr. "Scoring that goal right before halftime gave us a bit of a lift and gave us a little bit of hope. I'm disappointed with our conceding the second goal because we were getting back into the game, playing a little bit better. It's a shame."
Unable to find the back of the net despite having four shots on frame through 40 minutes, the Blue Devils equalized for a big momentum shift in the 45th minute. Senior
Max Moser, like he has done his entire career, beat a Virginia Tech defender down the flank and whipped a patented Moser cross across the box. And who else would be there to finish it but Proch, who headed it low inside the post for his 11th goal of the season.
The Blue Devils carried the momentum into the second half, carrying more of the possession and getting into the final third in search of the go-ahead score. However, the final touch just wasn't there tonight for Duke as Virginia Tech was able to defend well around the goal to keep Duke to just one shot on goal in the final 45 minutes.
With just under 30 minutes remaining in regulation, Virginia Tech drew a foul about 25 yards from goal. Pereira stepped behind the ball place above the 18-yard box on the left side. He sent a tough ball into the penalty area, where a shielded Pulisic couldn't get a clear look, leaving the ball at the foot of Kristo Strickler in front of a wide-open goal for the 2-1 lead.
The Blue Devils pressed the issue as the half wore on and Proch had a good individual effort that ended up right at Virginia Tech goalkeeper Mathijs Swaneveld. Moser also tested Swaneveld with a dangerous free kick from the left side as the junior goalkeeper finished the night with five saves.
"We did our best to force the issue, but they defended well the last 20 minutes and we just couldn't conjure up a goal."
Both teams finished the night with 11 shots apiece, while Virginia Tech had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Pulisic made three saves on the night.
Duke opens ACC postseason action at No. 5 seed NC State, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. The game will be televised by ACC Network. The Blue Devils and Wolfpack played to a 0-0 tie during the regular season.
The winner advances to play No. 3 seed Pittsburgh, Nov. 10.
