DURHAM, N.C. – Six Blue Devils, including three previous honorees, earned Easton/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2018-19 academic year, the organization announced Wednesday afternoon.
To qualify for the honor, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher over the fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters.
The six Duke student-athletes that make up the Blue Devils' second class of Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes are
Brianna Butler,
Caroline Jacobsen,
Jameson Kavel,
Reilly Metzger,
Raine Wilson and
Haley Wymbs. Butler, Kavel and Wymbs are the first Blue Devils in program history to earn the honor twice.
"The women in our program work so hard on and off the field to be successful as athletes while competing in the classroom academically at a Top 10 academic institution," Duke head coach
Marissa Young said. "I am thrilled to see these six recognized as All-America Scholar-Athletes."
Butler, entering her junior season with the Blue Devils, made 33 appearances in the circle with 22 starts last season. A native of Evans, Ga., Butler finished the year with a 9-5 record and threw 120.1 innings while posting a 2.97 ERA. She also recorded 14 hits and drove in 13 runs while tallying three doubles.
Jacobsen appeared and started in all of Duke's 56 games in 2019. She owned a .257 average at the plate and tied to lead the team with six home runs. The Tallahassee, Fla. native racked up 39 hits, 27 RBI, 26 runs scored and three stolen bases during her freshman season. She finished the season with eight multi-hit contests and five multi-RBI performances.
Kavel was a familiar face for the Blue Devils, appearing and starting in all 56 games for Duke a year ago. The Duluth, Ga., native finished with a .288 average at the plate, good enough for third on the Blue Devils roster. She scored 30 runs while driving in 14 on 51 hits. Kavel also turned in a team-leading six triples, finishing tied for second in the conference and tied for 11
th in the nation, while contributing 14 doubles and a home run. She showed her speed with 15 stolen bases, second on the team.
Metzger appeared in 27 games, starting 11 for Duke in 2019. The Boerne, Texas native held the highest batting average on the team with a .333 clip on 45 at bats. She tallied 15 hit and batted in nine runners on the year. With an on-base percentage of 0.415, Metzger notched her name second in the Duke history books for on base percentage in a season.
Wilson appeared and started in 50 games at various positions for Duke during the 2019 campaign. Put together a .267 clip with 36 hits, 24 RBI, 19 runs, six home runs, five doubles and a pair of triples. Showcasing her power at the plate, the Mechanicsville, Va. native led the team with a .467 slugging percentage. Recorded a .377 on-base percentage behind a team-high 20 walks.
Wymbs appeared in 12 games, starting four, during her final campaign for Duke. She held a .214 batting average on 14 plate appearances. The San Jose, Calif., batted in a runner at Syracuse helping Duke to a 5-1 win.
The Blue Devils, being fall play Saturday, Oct 5 in Wilmington, N.C. with a doubleheader against East Carolina and UNC-Wilmington. The games will begin at noon on the campus of UNCW.
