DURHAM, N.C. – Seven members of the Duke men's tennis team head to the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., this weekend looking to build on a strong start to the fall portion of the 2019-20 schedule.
Play begins Saturday at The University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Pre-qualifying rounds run Saturday and Sunday, followed by a qualifying round Monday and Tuesday. The tournament's singles and doubles main draws will be held Oct. 9-13. The men's championship final will air live on ESPNU Sunday, Oct. 13 at 8 p.m.
Blue Devil juniors
Edu Güell and
Sean Sculley will be joined by freshmen teammates
Garrett Johns,
Omni Kumar,
Samuel Rubell and
Andrew Zhang in pre-qualifying action.
Güell, Sculley and Zhang all captured singles titles in their last outing at the Duke James Bonk Invitational Sept. 20-22.
Senior
Nick Stachowiak will lead Duke in the qualifying round and is also an alternate for the singles main draw. Stachowiak was tabbed 59th in the ITA's preseason singles poll and reached the semifinals of his singles draw at the Bonk Invitational.
"For five guys, it will be their second Duke tournament," said head coach
Ramsey Smith. "Really pleased with how we looked at Bonk overall. I thought we competed well, won a lot of matches and built some momentum. Practices since our Bonk Invite have been really good. It's just a really good opportunity to play on the national stage ... Especially with the pre-qualifying draws, you could play a guy who ends up being top-20 in the country. Excited to build some team momentum."
In doubles, Sculley and Stachowiak will team up in the qualifying draw. The duo advanced to the consolation final of their doubles draw at the Bonk Invitational where they defeated Elon's Kyle Frankel and Camilo Ponce by a 6-4 score.
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles semifinalists and consolation finalists will receive automatic entry into the 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, slated for Nov. 6-10 in Newport Beach, Calif.
