ATLANTA, Ga. – At the East Lake Cup this week in Atlanta, Ga., the Duke women's golf team was presented with the fifth annual Tom Cousins Award. The honor recognizes a collegiate golfer(s) best representing the values of the award: excelling in academics and engagement in the community.
The Blue Devils earned the distinction for their passion in helping others in their community. Initially established by
Virginia Elena Carta, who graduated from Duke in 2019, the team's "Birdies for Babies" initiative raises money for the Duke Children's Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units, having raised more than $40,000 to-date. The program was adopted during the 2017-18 season and enables anyone to pledge money for every birdie, eagle, albatross and hole-in-one the team records in competition.
Carta, the 2016 NCAA Individual Champion, closed her Duke career by helping lead the Blue Devils to the 2019 NCAA team title as well. She was recently one of the nine finalists for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year.
Since the program began, the Blue Devils have brought the Duke men's golf program on board to help raise money through making birdies. The future goal is to get more teams on Duke's campus involved.
The Tom Cousins Award is named after developer and philanthropist Tom Cousins, who laid out an aspirational blueprint to revitalize the East Lake community of Atlanta by providing cradle-to-college education, mixed-income housing and community wellness to break the cycle of poverty to create a holistic environment. East Lake now acts as a national model for community redevelopment through Purpose Built Communities for transforming a struggling community into a thriving neighborhood.
Vanderbilt's Michael Shears received the men's honor.
In stroke play action Monday, Duke earned the top seed for match play by shooting a two-under-par, 286, and senior
Ana Belac was tied for first individually. The Blue Devils dropped their semifinal match to Auburn, 3-2. In the consolation match versus Arizona, Duke fell, 3-2, to close action at history East Lake Golf Club.
