DURHAM, NC – Head coach
Marissa Young and the Duke Softball program go into the fall season excited for what is ahead. After two seasons of play, Young and the young program look to add an offensive surge to dominant defense and pitching from previous season. The Blue Devils open fall ball this weekend in Wilmington, N.C.
"I'm excited to take the field," Young said. "We have a lot of depth this year at different positions. Fans will see a lot of combinations at different positions while we are finding where the new additions will plug in most successfully."
Coming off 29 wins in year one and 25 wins last season, Team3 looks to make an impact on the field and in the Duke history books.
BACK ON THE FIELD
Duke begins fall play with eight games on the horizon, all in the month of October. The first games of the fall come this coming weekend with a double-header on the campus of UNC-Wilmington. The Blue Devils face East Carolina at noon before taking on the hosts at 2:30 p.m.
The Blue Devils take three more trips during fall ball as they face Tennessee on Oct. 13, UNC-Greensboro on Oct. 20 and Campbell on Oct. 25.
Duke is slated to host three fall contests with the first being on Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. against fellow Durham native North Carolina Central. Two days later, Oct. 19, the Blue Devils host Charlotte at 1 p.m. The last game of the fall season sees Duke host Winthrop at 2 p.m. on Oct. 26.
All of Duke's home contests will be played at the Duke Softball Stadium and are free to attend.

FAMILIAR FACES IN THE CIRCLE
22 wins are returning to Durham by the way of three arms,
Brianna Butler,
Peyton St. George and
Shelby Walters. Butler led the trio of returnees last year with nine wins and 120.1 innings pitched. The Evans, Ga., native finished the year with an ERA of 2.97.
St. George led in ERA and strikeouts a season ago with a 2.58 and 90, respectively. With 96 strikeouts during her first season Durham, the junior out of Mechanicsville, Va., is the only Duke Softball player to throw back to back seasons of 90+ strikeouts. She threw three complete games and one shutout.
Walters rounds out the returning bullpen. She returns to Durham with 87 strikeouts in 98.1 innings pitched. Her 27 appearances yielded a 3.92 ERA through the 2019 season.
With experienced pitching taking the circle, Duke is excited for the upcoming season.
DAVIS LOOKS TO STAY HOT
Sophomore infielder
Deja Davis had a record freshman season with the Blue Devils. With a batting average of .324, she sits second in program history for highest batting average in a season with a minimum of 50 at bats.
Not only was Davis lethal at the plate, but her speed proved to be dangerous on the bases as well. Davis stole 24 bases on 25 attempts, the most bases stolen in a season in program history.
The Blue Devils look again to Davis to get things started offensively at the top of the line-up this season.
NEWCOMERS TO TOWN
Duke brought in a class of three freshmen and two transfers.
Felise Collins,
Kamryn Jackson and
Gisele Tapia make up the freshman class. Collins is a standout utility player from Suwanee, Ga. Jackson comes to Durham from Tampa, Fla. Tapia joins the Blue Devils from Long Beach, Calif. Although the trio are from around the country, they have found a special sisterhood at Duke.
"I expect each of them to contribute in a big way," Young said of the freshmen. "They all came in early this summer for school which was a big commitment on their part. That decision to come early sped up the clock of them getting acclimated and they're ready to be an impact right away."
The duo of transfers,
Sydney Bolan and
Kendyl Lange, embark on new journeys at Duke. Bolan comes to Duke from Central Connecticut State University while Lange joins the Blue Devils from Central Florida.
"Both of them have come in and been bought into the culture," Young commented. "They have built great relationships with their teammates and worked hard to find their niche to contribute on the field."
NEW STAFF IN DURHAM
There are four new additions to the Duke Softball staff, assistant coach
Josh Bloomer, assistant coach
Jessica Bracamonte, volunteer assistant coach
Kellie Quarles and Assistant of Operations
Kyle Brady.
Bloomer comes to Duke from Louisville Male High School in Louisville, Ky. His 2019 team put together a 39-0 ledger for only the second unbeaten season in program history and became the first team from the state of Kentucky to finish a season ranked No. 1 nationally. For his efforts, Bloomer was tabbed a finalist for USA Today's National High School Coach of the Year award, and his staff was named the 2019 Kentucky 3A State Coaching Staff of the Year. Bloomer will primarily serve as the hitting and infield coach.
Bracamonte spent the previous six seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan. In her time, she has helped guide Central Michigan to the Mid-American Conference Tournament every year, as well as capturing the MAC Regular Season Championship in 2017. She produced 12 All-MAC First Team selections, seven second team honorees and placed four players on the All-Freshman squad. Bracamonte will primarily work with the slappers and outfielders.
Quarles joins the Duke Staff after three seasons as an assistant at Florida SouthWestern State College. During her three years with the Bucs', she helped FSW capture three consecutive Suncoast Conference Championships, two FCSAA State Championships in 2017 and 2018, two NJCAA National Tournament appearances in 2017 and 2018, a 173-15 overall record and a 56-4 record in conference. Quarles will primarily coach the catchers and assist with the hitters.
Brady made his way to Durham after spending six years in softball and baseball player development with an emphasis on the integration of technology to the development process. Prior to joining the Duke staff, he worked as an owner and instructor of multiple softball training companies, most notably The VeloLab, which is utilized by softball and baseball programs nationwide.
"I can't say enough about these four incredible individuals," said Young of the new staff. "They are all proven winners, great people to work with and are so invested in the development of every woman in our program."
