ATLANTA, Ga. – After finishing strong in Monday's stroke play to earn the No. 1 seed in match play at the 2019 East Lake Cup, the Duke women's golf team dropped its semifinal match Tuesday, 3-2, to fourth-seeded Auburn at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga.
The Blue Devils will conclude action Wednesday in the consolation match against second-seeded Arizona, who fell, 3-1-1, to third-seeded Wake Forest.
"Well, we aren't playing to win this thing, so that's unfortunate," said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. "I think they fought hard. It seemed like everybody was, as far as I could tell, everybody was fighting hard, that's all you can do."
Duke jumped out to good starts in three of the five matches, but Auburn would take control of four matches midway through the day.
Going out first for the Blue Devils was junior
Miranda Wang against Megan Schofill of Auburn. Wang, who is from Beijing, China, halved the first two holes, which included a sand save for par on No. 2. She dropped holes No. 3 and No. 4 to fall behind and couldn't come back. Trailing by one through 12 holes, Wang lost holes No. 13-15 and fell, 4&3.
Getting off to Duke's best start of the day was freshman
Erica Shepherd as she won each of her first three holes, which was capped by an eight-foot birdie on the third hole. Kaleigh Telfer of Auburn would make a comeback on the front nine as she won no. 5, No. 6 and No. 8 to even the match. Shepherd, who is from Greenwood, Ind., made a par on the 11th to take a 1-UP lead, but Telfer birdied No. 12 to even the match again. Telfer responded with back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th to go ahead 2-UP with three holes remaining.
Shepherd would not back down as she hit her approach on the 365-yard, par four 16th to a foot and made her birdie to cut into the lead. She then sank a six-footer for birdie on No. 17 and went to the 18th trailing by one hole. Shepherd hit her approach on the par five 18th to just short of the green and was able to get up-and-down for birdie to win the match, 1-UP.
With the score knotted at 1-1, Brooks Sansom was able to take down Duke's
Gina Kim, 3&2, to go ahead 2-1. Kim, a native of Chapel Hill, N.C., registered a sand save for par on No. 3 to go ahead, 1-UP, but bogeyed the next hole to return the match to all square. After dropping hole No. 6, she would make the turn trailing by one. Kim won No. 10 to return the match to all square, but missed the green on the par five 11th and lost the hole. She would go on to lose holes No. 14 and No. 16 to fall, 3&2, to Sansom.
Duke junior
Jaravee Boonchant never trailed in her match against Julie McCarthy on her way to winning, 3&2.
The deciding match would come down to Duke's
Ana Belac and Auburn's Mychael O'Berry. Belac, who was coming off tying for individual medalist honors a day ago with a three-under, 69, Monday, couldn't match her scores from a day before. Belac dropped hole No. 2 and couldn't get swing the match the rest of the way. She got in trouble off the tee on No. 8 and suffered a bogey and then dropped holes No. 11, No. 12 and No. 13 to fall behind by five. Looking to make a rally on the par five 14th, Belac reached the green in two, but three-putted to halve the hole and end the match, 5&4.
"It's a great thing to have a combination stroke and match play event at the end of the year that's televised and has a lot of hype at the end of the fall," added Brooks. "You know, it's kind of a rehearsal. So yeah, it's good."
With inclement weather expected to come in overnight, all matches will begin Wednesday at 8:30 a.m., with Duke/Arizona starting off the back nine. Live coverage from the Golf Channel will begin at 10:30 a.m.
"It's great, what a great golf course," commented Brooks on playing at the East Lake Golf Club. "I mean, you can't do any better than this."
General admission and parking for the East Lake Cup is free and open to the public. Complimentary tickets are available here and free parking is located in the grass lots across the street from the East Lake Golf Club front gate: 2650 Alston Drive SE, Atlanta., Ga.
